Believe it or not, it’s emotionally and spiritually exhausting to come to the digital page daily and write about the struggles of the community.

So to start off this beautiful day let’s think of ways to escape (or survive in Arizona). Hat tip to Laura Martinez of Mi Blog es Tu Blog for tweeting the hell out of this.

And the latest from News with Nezua on the “Terror Baby” madness and healthier alternatives.

For another perspective on the #MockICE Checkpoint that went down at Netroots Nation last week in Las Vegas, here is the latest edition of News with Nezua, cross-posted with the gracious permission of Alfredo de La Frontera Times and Nezua.

I really wanted to repost this because it is the only video that features the perspective of some of the Latinos who participated in the MockICE action at Netroots Nation last week and because specifically it features a mujer, Yahira Carillo, as mentioned in my last post on this, talking about how her multifaceted reality was completely overlooked and ignored by one of those stopped at the checkpoint.

Featuring the Netroots Nation 2010 Immigration Checkpoint mock ICE action.

In reference to the nightmare that SB 1070 represents, a group of friends and myself staged a mock immigration checkpoint where we racially profiled European immigrants and their descendants, and required them to show papers that proved they had a right to trespass on native land. Some were puzzled, many laughed, and a couple were furious. What made the difference in these reactions? And how would the most upset of these people feel were they to experience for even one day the true threat of being under the glare of anti-immigrant hostility and anti-Latino hate in the USA today?

The latest episode of News with Nezua is one I had to link to because it was about a figure that unfortunately I have come into contact with in my years as an activist and blogger, the white professional anti-racist. This person may come across as being on your side and having your back pero eventually will try and create/promote divisions and create conflict to support his/her own career growth. Not to mention the tokenization. While Nez’s video is male-centric, there are plenty of women who play the role as well. Additionally, as a women who has sat in conferences and been brought to events, the way that tokenizing and divide and conquer politics plays out against women of color is especially problematic.

Today the Supreme Court is hearing two cases that could hopefully change how the (in)justice system sentences juveniles. The cases specifically deal with sentencing youth to life without parole and if that is unconstitutional. The cases being used are that of Terrance Jamar Graham and Joe Sullivan, who were 16 and 13, respectively, when they committed their crimes. Not surprisingly, considering how in all phases of the criminal (in)justice system people of color are profiled and targeted, the Supreme Court’s ruling could impact the case of Latino Efrén Paredes, Jr., who at age 15 and wrongly convicted in 1989 for a murder and armed robbery he did not commit; a crime to which others have admitted guilt.

This week’s News With Nezua discusses what the Supreme Court is up to and what’s at stake.

Oh Wait So Lou Dobbs Lies, Again?

2 Nov 2009

Last week I wrote about how Lou Dobbs’ twisted obsession with framing reality to fit his hateful agenda has been stepped up. Turns out that Dobbs’ characterization of the “attack” on his home was ::gasp:: not entirely accurate. I mean, hell even the NY Post, who usually is an apologist for racist behavior and attitudes even wrote it up. Our Unapologetic Mexican friend, Nezua, breaks it down.
