Outgoing NY Governor Paterson Leaves State an (In)Secure Community

I wanted to like NY State Governor David Paterson. I really did, but his lackluster job was just topped with bitter icing thanks to his signing of a “new” Secure Communities agreement that does nothing more than draw pretty flowers around barbed wire and shackles.

For the past few months, various organizations and politicians have been asking Paterson to pull New York State out of Secure Communities, the program which automatically sends the fingerprints collected by local police departments to I.C.E. What outgoing Governor Paterson did instead was sign a new pact which allegedly adds language, according to the NYT that:

…explains the enforcement priorities of the Department of Homeland Security and clarifying that the agency will focus on deportable immigrants considered a threat to public safety and national security, as well as those who have been convicted of crimes or have illegally re-entered the United States after being deported.

I’m supposed to be working another job right now and not blogging, pero I wanted to express extreme disappointment in the The Marriage Equality Act not passing in the NY State Senate.
The vote was 38-24.

Hiram Monserrate, my state senator, whom I have written about, apparently has no love for women, and has no love for the many LGBT residents in his district and trust me, there are many. He, a Democrat, voted against the act, and I would be more than down to help organize some sort of protest in front of this vendegente’s office.

Westchester County, just north of NYC, sent out as many as 20,000 mailers with a “typo” on the Spanish version only, that election day is November 9th, not today.

“I think most people do know when Election Day is, but if you get an official letter from the Board of Elections that tells you another day, you might be confused,” said Grace Heymann, director of the Westchester Hispanic Coalition.

“I would especially worry about first-time voters,” she said. “We have been working hard to get out the vote, and we are getting some questions because of this letter.”

The mailing, about the availability of ballot marking devices used by disabled voters, was in English and Spanish. The English part was correct, but the Spanish section said Election Day was Nov. 9 instead of Nov. 4.
