Mala is kind of into that whole navidad thing, complete with cooking, singing, gifting, and drinking (got coquito chilling in the fridge). That said I don’t know how often the updates will be flowing over the next few days. It really is dependent on my kids’ holiday spirit.
That said, regardless of if/how you are celebrating over the next few days, wishing each and every one of you joy, justice and peace.
P.S. : The video below, yes is problematic in a few ways (can you spot the signs of colonialism and apologies in advance to the observant Catholics) but as a recovering Catholic and as a #techputa, I found it amusing nonetheless.

Mala may struggle with Thanksgiving, pero I’m a sucker for the Christmas season. Not the Christ-y religious part of it (although I acknowledge that I carry stuff from my Catholic upbringing), pero celebrating Navidad as a Rican in NYC is one of my favorite cosas in the world and I’m not ashamed to say it.
If you need a reason to love Navidad en NYC, here’s one: Los Nutcrackers: A Christmas Carajo .
“HO! HO! HO!” becomes “HA! HA! HA!” this holiday
season with LOS NUTCRACKERS: A CHRISTMAS
CARAJO.This queer, Latino, holiday play
returns for
the 6th triumphant year to celebrate the holidays in a
whole new way. Written by BAAD!’s own Charles
Rice-González and directed by the award-winning
Jorge Merced.The play features a talented and sexy cast of Latino
actors including: Johnathan Cedano, Indio
Melendez, Gabriel Morales, Cisco Perez, and
Yosvany Reyes. Returning this year, in a
special role is the legendary Bronx drag diva
Appolonia Cruz.This play centers around a couple, Carlos and
Gabriel, who have been together for almost 15 years.
Their arguing and fighting has reached the queer
heavens from which comes a ghetto thug/diva spirit
who guides them on a trip through their lives. They
travel to the first time they met back in 1986 at a white
party at the Palladium dancing to Lisa Lisa and Cult
Jam to a catastrophic trip to City Center to see The
Nutcracker, to a dinner party with Martha Stewart
fanatics, and more.Show times are:
* Thursday, December 3 at 8pm
* Friday, December 4 at 8pm
* Saturday, December 5 at 8pm
* Thursday, December 10 at 8pm
* Friday, December 11 at 8pm
* Saturday, December 12 at 8pm
Ay someone needs to watch my kids so I can go see this or por lo menos buy tickets and tell them merry crica from la Mala.

25 Dec 2008This commercial isn’t new, but I thought you readers would like to see how Nestle’s La Lechera markets to consumers in Mexico. Here’s a curious nod to U.S.-Mexico immigration guaranteed to tug at your heartstrings…or at least at your gut. The sickeningly sweet tone of this ad can only be topped by the sickening sweetness of La Lechera itself. Enjoy…and Felíz Navidad!

As much as I hate so many holidays, I can’t help but get excited about Christmas. I am working on a longer post about my personal navidad memories and traditions rooted in Ricanness but also in my parents’ sense of upward mobility and assimilation. Pero first welcome to the official kick off of the holiday season here at VL.
What do you celebrate around this time of year, if anything?
P.S. : Check after the jump for info about Jose Feliciano’s tour including the only “Latino” holiday song that gringos know and insist on singing if you’re the token Latino at the holiday party.

Ok, I’m totally kidding (I would never advocate the selling, buying, or distribution of drugs) but this picture that arrived in my inbox was way too good to pass up. Apparently there are three people licensed to sell the hallucinogenic cactus peyote in the United States and this guy is one of them.
In all seriousness, Peyote is a sacred plant, used, like many other plants, for religious ceremonies by many indigenous tribes in the Southwest region of what is now the U.S. In the U.S., the use of Peyote is protected but only as part of a religious ceremony (sorry druggies).

With media talking heads and politicians worrying about how to properly greet people during the winter holidays without offending anyone or leaving anyone out (because it’s not like there’s a war going on or anything), according to DiversityInc, Christian Science Monitor columnist and comedian Julia Gorin has the solution, just say “Feliz Navidad”. According to the article:
Her solution stems from the knowledge that Latino cultures so far don’t seem to be troubled by wording complexes. “Latin Americans, for example, aren’t about to alter the greeting ‘Feliz Navidad.’ Like the song says, ‘Feliz Navidad! Feliz Navidad! I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas….’ It doesn’t say, ‘Feliz Día de Fiesta! Feliz Día de Fiesta!’ In fact, the Yahoo! dictionary doesn’t even have a translation for ‘holiday’ in Spanish,” says Gorin.
