NYC Rally for Puerto Rico: Tues 12/14

8:17 am By Maegan La Mala · Education|New York City|Puerto Rico · Comments Off

13 Dec 2010

Last week, we told you about the student strike in Puerto Rico. Things have gotten more tense with the police taking over campuses in the name of “order”.

Across the United States, Puerto Ricans have expressed their concern over the treatment of the students and over the lack of English language coverage. In Puerto Rico, this past weekend, there was a march in rally in support of the UPR, demanding that talks over the increase in fees, between the University Administration and the students, resume.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, there will be a rally in NYC in support of the people of the island and against the actions of the Puerto Rican colonial government.

The people of Puerto Rico are under siege by the Colonial Administration headed by governor Luis Fortuno. Join us in supporting the people as they struggle to safeguard the right of our youth to education in the University of Puerto Rico, protect public sector jobs and the services they provide. Join us in supporting those on the island who are standing up to defend their democratic and human rights and our culture. Join the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights (NCPRR) N.Y.C. Chapter and support the people in struggle in Puerto Rico.

WHAT: Press conference and vigil demanding
justice for Joaquin Rivera
WHEN: Sunday, December 6, 2009, 10 a.m.
WHERE: In front of Aria Health Center , 4900 Frankford Avenue

On Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 10 am , in front of Aria Health’s Frankford Campus
4900 Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia, members of the National Congress for Puerto
Rican Rights (NCPRR), a civil and human rights group, will join the family of
Joaquin Rivera , other local activists, politicians and organizations in demanding
justice while also calling for the systematic overhaul of a inept healthcare system
that would allow for such a tragedy.
Rivera, a beloved father, school counselor, musician and activist was left to die
in the Aria Health emergency room last Saturday. Adding to this indignity, Rivera
was also robbed while hospital staff continued to ignore his lifeless body. This
indignity has been fully captured on videotape that has been broadcast nationally,
to compound the pain and humiliation that Mr. Rivera’s family and friends will
endure through this loss.

Full disclosure : I credit my experience working within the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights in NYC as critical in my political development.

logo.gifThe Latino vote is one of the most talked about target groups in this presidential election season. Everyone wants us to register, wants us to vote, but what is often forgotten is that Latino means many things, coming from many places. Puerto Ricans (yes there she goes again) have their own issues that demand attention along with other Latino groups, and one Rican organization is demanding that John McCain and Barack Obama respond to the specific interests of the Rican community.

The National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights, a social justice organization, has written a letter inviting the candidates to collaborate with the NCPRR to develop a means for communication with the Puerto Rican community.

“We are willing to work with the candidates to creatively set up a discussion that will allow our community to understand the candidates’ positions. Our children are also dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, and we should know what the future will bring from these candidates.” said Vazquez-Hernandez, a professor of history at Miami Dade College, who is a Vietnam Era veteran and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

Full disclosure : The NCPRR was the formative entity in terms of my political upbringing.

Read the entire letter after the jump.
