20 year old San Francisco City College student Steve “Shing Ma” Li is scheduled to be deported to Peru tomorrow, Monday. In Peru he knows no one. That’s because Steve’s family is Chinese. He was born in Peru before being brought to the U.S. by his parents.

Li’s parents, who face their own removal order, immigrated to Peru from China in the 1980s, partially to help Li’s aging grandparents and partially to escape China’s one-child policy. And there Li was born, before his family immigrated again in 2002 to the U.S. to escape political instability in Peru. His family filed for political asylum in the U.S. but were denied. A judge put out a removal order for their family in 2004, which Li’s parents quietly tried to ignore, all unbeknownst to Li.

On September 15th, ICE arrested Li and placed him in a detention center in Arizona where he has been ever since.
Since the announcement of the final deportation order, there has been an outpouring of support including rallies and petitions. On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s spokesman said that she was working with other members of Congress to “recommend that (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) grant deferred action in this case.” However on Friday afternoon, Li’s lawyer, Sin Yen Ling, received a fax that denied deferred action.

“The last paragraph said deportation is always hard on family and friends and the community but unfortunately the application for Steve does not rise to the level that warrants deferred action status,” she said.

It looks like California Sen. Barbara Boxer can step in to issue a private bill on Steve’s behalf.

Meanwhile, friends, supporters and organizations continue to fight on his behalf and wait if Li will turn into another person deported under the Obama administration and under a Congress that has refused to enact Comprehensive Immigration Reform or the move the DREAM Act or if Li and his parents will be able to stay in the U.S. as a family.

You can send a fax on behalf of Steve here gracias to America’s Voice.

Call me cynical and evil, but I don’t believe Ms. Pelosi–me thinks she does stumble over her way too many protests too much.

Pelosi called for the CIA to release detailed notes from her own September 2002 briefing about interrogation techniques. She said today that, at that 2002 briefing, she was told the CIA was not waterboarding detainees despite later government reports showing that a high value al Qaeda detainee had been subjected to waterboarding 83 times in the weeks leading up to Pelosi’s briefing.

“At every step of the way, the administration was misleading the Congress. And that is the issue,” Pelosi said in a heated news conference, linking the alleged misinformation on waterboarding to now discredited intelligence reports in fall 2002 about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

I think she knew all about the “enhanced” interrogations (AKA TORTURE), as did everybody else, INCLUDING President Obama. How could you not? Were these people just miraculously unaware of all the reports being put out by the ACLU, the lawyers of people being detained, the doctors, the interrogaters, the media that was oh so reluctantly reporting on this shit (CBS was not the first time accusations of prisoner abuse surfaced, it was just the first time pictures were made available!)…I don’t believe any of them. The good thing is that Obama seems to be willing to hold people in the higher up positions accountable–which is making all those involved stumble and growl and send daughters to the media in panic.

We’ll see how this all shakes down as the year progresses…but I’m not holding my breath for a Pelosi exoneration.

Pelosi, ICE, Activists Prepare for Long Battle

PelosiHetchy.jpgBecause I’m just that kinda gal, I spend a lot of time surfing anti-immigrant sites so that you don’t have to. It’s not a lot of fun, but I often come up with some really startling/interesting news about the latest shenanigans of those God-Loving-Mexkin-haters.

For example, the latest news sweeping the hate-o-sphere is that Nancy Pelosi is not really sorta anti-immigrant, but really, she’s secretly advocating to destroy ICE (the lovely organization that conducts raids that destroy families). Where did the God-Loving-Mexkin-haters (GLMH’s) get this information? Well, apparently there was a press conference put together by pro-immigration groups to announce a protest for the day after Obama’s inauguration, and they let the news slip:

“We applaud Speaker Nancy Pelosi for expressing her support for ending worksite raids and for calling for just and humane immigration reform,” Hong said.

The raids, according to Hong, have been “one of the most destructive aspects of our failed immigration policy.” She said raids on companies that employ illegal aliens “separate families and destroy work places.”

Now, of course, when I googled Nancy Pelosi and “ending workshite raids” I got no results back–and when I googled the more ambiguous Nancy Pelosi and “ICE raids” I got the Vivir Latino post about how Nancy is ‘maybe’ considering ‘maybe’ not allowing a path to citizenship for undocumented ‘maybe’ workers…

But hell, don’t let the google Gods get in the way of Mexkin hating panic. Not when it’s so fun.

On a more serious note, this should be proof to you about how well the GLMH folks are organized. They are organizing around a press release, folks. Time for us to come out of our Obama loving haze, huh?

nancy-pelosi.jpgStill think that electoral politics is going to solve the immigration issue? Or that being a Democrat means a magic answer to save Latinos once we, as a sleeping giant that everyone keeps talking about, vote? Gracias to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is keeping it real by stepping away from offering a path to citizenship to immigrants.

…Pelosi also said Congress would have to tackle the politically sticky job of overhauling immigration laws in the new Congress, after a bipartisan measure collapsed last year.

The estimated 12 million immigrants in the U.S. illegally “are part of the U.S. economy. We cannot send them all home, and we cannot send them all to jail, so we have to address it,” Pelosi said.

Any solution would have to be bipartisan, she said, so it may require sacrificing some of Democrats’ past priorities, such as giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship.

“Maybe there never is a path to citizenship if you came here illegally,” Pelosi said. “I would hope that there could be, but maybe there isn’t.”
