Is it “Adios” for MySpace Latino?

360063615_1be4928ee9About 2 years ago we told you about MySpace’s bid for Latino market share, aptly named “MySpace Latino”. Back then, MySpace was leading the social networking revolution, but fast forward to today, and we find that MySpace “original” is becoming more irrelevant by the minute in the shadow of Facebook. Perhaps that’s why the Latino version of the service might be going the way of the Walkman. GigaOm’s Jennifer Martinez reports:

As MySpace struggles to regain ground it’s lost to Facebook and sort out its revenue woes, executive departures from MySpace Latino, a combination Spanish-English site targeted at U.S.-based Latinos that launched a little over a year ago, indicate it may be on the chopping block. MySpace Latino’s VP of Hispanic sales and strategy, Manny Miravete, has left the company, and the site’s managing director, Victor Kong, has reportedly left as well. The site itself hasn’t been refreshed in over a week amid a wave of layoffs at MySpace’s U.S. and international offices.

I’m not sure how successful the Latino version was, but it’s no loss to me. I never touched it, and I don’t know anyone who did. This is an instance in which the brand didn’t need to niche itself out to appeal to Latinos – it did it just to please advertisers who wanted to target the Latino segment. Disingenuous attempts at catering to an audience are seldom successful, and much less when the main brand is already creaking under the weight of one hefty competitor and a series of dispersed services and sites that have innovated while MySpace has remained asleep at the wheel.

Martínez also reports that an email statement from MySpace says that the site will “remain live and not shut down” and that MySpace Latino is merely “restructuring”. Whatever the case, I won’t be visiting anytime soon.

The phenomenon apparently extends beyond the U.S. Latino operation. Late last month it was reported that MySpace Brazil, Mexico and Argentina would also be shutting down. That was quick.

MySpace is Now Tu Espace

myspace.pngAfter launching a Spanish version of their popular social networking site and a Mexican version, MySpace is now speaking Spanglish, launching a bilingual version of the site this week at the Latin Latin Billboard Conference.

The website will be in Spanish and English and its offerings will include entertainment, sports, music, and fashion content from Impremedia, Gibson Guitar, Remezcla, Billboard and Spanish Broadcasting System.

Picture%203.pngIt didn’t take a genius to realize that MySpace — one of the “new” internet’s biggest (and most unlikely) success stories — needed to address the issue of language sooner or later. To better serve the presumably millions of Spanish-speaking users already on MySpace and to attract even more (cha-ching!), the company has made the very smart decision to launch MySpace en Español:

“We’re moving rapidly to build communities that reflect and respect the lifestyles of our diverse members,” Travis Katz, senior vice president and general manager of MySpace International, said in a statement. “MySpace en Español opens the community even wider, giving our Hispanic members the choice to share their experiences, connect with family members and plan their social lives in either Spanish or English.”

MySpace Mexico to become a reality

360063615_1be4928ee9.jpgSince the meteoric rise of MySpace.com, many have speculated on whether the company would take advantage of the enormous potential in Latin American markets, where there are users just dying to take part in the site but feel isolated because it isn’t available in their language of choice (let’s be honest, the interface is terrible even if you do speak English). Never the one to miss a chance at earning some millions, NewsCorp’s Fox Interactive is making moves to launch the Mexican version of MySpace:

Word of “MySpace Mexico” began to spread on Tuesday when information about the site leaked to entertainment news site Billboard.com.

Travis Katz, head of international media for News Corp.’s Fox Interactive Media, of which MySpace is a subsidiary, on Wednesday confirmed the development of the site to CNET News.com. According to Katz, the site has been “soft-launched,” meaning that a preliminary version is live but that MySpace doesn’t inform anyone of it and does not direct any traffic there.

According to ZDNet, the original MySpace already has 1 million Mexican users, and that these users will be phased into MySpace Mexico once the site begins beta testing. MySpace is also currently running beta sites in Germany, Italy, Spain and Japan.

Most Teens Network Online

teens.jpgWhile VL has it’s own MySpace page, anyone who has a profile up on MySpace or Friendster or MiGente or any of the other countless social networking sites knows that those cyberspaces generally cater to two catagories of people: teens and those looking to hook up. A new study shows that more that half of teens use such so called social networking sites.

Older teens, girls in particular, are the most likely to have created online profiles at social networking sites such as MySpace.com and FaceBook.com. The study found that 58% of girls and 51% of boys in the 12 to 17 age group had created an online profile. Among those in the 15- to 17-year-old range, 70% of girls had online profiles compared with 57% of boys.

The reasons teens use social networking sites, according to the study, include maintaining contact with frequently seen friends (91%) and rarely seen friends (82%), social planning (72%), and making new friends (49%). Only 17% say they use such sites to flirt

Picture%203.pngYeah, we know we’ll hate ourselves in the morning, but we’ve sold out, broke down, we did it: we have a MySpace profile.

I know, I know. And I don’t wanna hear it. As crappy as MySpace is, it is a very good way to reach a lot of people en masse, and spread the VL message. More readers means more interaction, better community and a more robust, entertaining blog for you.

So if you also have sunken to the depths of joining MySpace, why not add VivirLatino as a friend? You can check out our profile here. And be sure to add lots of lame comments to make it that much more fun.
