16 Nov 2009This news is just so sad and horrific and enraging.

“On November 14 the body of a gay 19 year old was found a few miles away from the town in which he was residing in called Caguas. He was a very well known person in the gay community of Puerto Rico, and very loved. He was found on the site of an isolated road in the city of Cayey, he was partially burned, decapitated, and dismembered, both arms, both legs, and the torso. This has caused a huge reaction from the gay community here, but its a difficult situation. Never in the history of Puerto Rico has a murder been classified as a hate crime. Even though we have to follow federal mandates and laws, many of the laws in which are passed in the USA such as Obama’s new bill, do not always directly get practiced in Puerto Rico. The police agent that is handling this case said on a public televised statement that ‘people who lead this type of lifestyle need to be aware that this will happen’. As If the boy murdered Jorge Steven Lopez was asking to get killed…”
May peace be with Jorge Steven Lopez and VL sends so much love and support to his family and loved ones during this horrible time. VL will keep you updated on any actions that happen.

14 Nov 2008Thanks to Frau Sally Benz, I found out about Marcelo Lucero, a Latin@ man in New York that was murdered by a group of teens that were “looking for some Mexicans.”
I’m all about speaking intelligently, making coherent arguments and putting things in context, but Marcelo Lucero was MURDERED simply b/c he was Latino, and the New York Times keeps ignoring the (in)humanity of it all.
Their article on the 10th at least starts with the statement the group of SEVEN made: “Let’s go find some Mexicans.” The details known at the time were mentioned, which is good, but then they end with:
It is not yet clear how closely connected Mr. Lucero’s murder is to this broad wave of xenophobia.
Um. It seems pretty freakin’ clear to me that there is a strong connection between the “fuck all the immigrants, kick them out of the country, all Latinos are immigrants and don’t deserve to be here” and a case of SEVEN teens who declare “Let’s go find some Mexicans,” and consequently beat and stab a man to death because he fits their profile (all Latinos are the same, after all).
There will be a vigil tonight–if you’re in New York, please stop by and show support:

Some shocking news out of Buenos Aires, Argentina: two children, aged 7 and 9 have allegedly murdered a baby and declared to police that they did so “with pleasure”:
Argentine society is witness to the horror and confusion caused by the revelation of the details around the death of a 2 year old girl. It happened on Sunday…Milagros Belizán [pictured] was first beaten over the head, later hung on the wall and finally beaten relentlessly with wooden boards and suffocated little by little until she died. Medical examiners say she endured “long agony…
The crime was originally blamed on an adult, and authorities had to intervene to avoid the man being lynched by neighbors. Later the bizarre truth came out. Witnesses had seen two boys abusing the baby in the street, the police questioned them, and when they told the story of what they had done, they did so with pride and excitement.
The children accused of the crime reportedly come from a violent family environment. Police are looking to take the boys out of their homes because of death threats from neighbors.

The wave of violence against grupero musicians in Mexico continues, with a new murder making headlines. The body of Jorge Antonio Sepúlveda Armenta, 20 –a.k.a. El Koquillo de Sinaloa — was found yesterday alongside a highway in rural Sinaloa state. The cause appears to be various gunshot wounds.
Next to Sepúlveda’s body, investigators found a burned truck and several 9 millimeter and machine gun casings. His death marks the 4th murder in the grupera community in little over a month.

The new year in Argentina began with a scandalous occurrence — first the death of a baby who was hit by a taxi, then the murder of the taxi driver by an angry mob:
Minutes before 2007 got started, a woman with a 8 month-old baby was run over by a taxi. The child died shortly after, according to Clarín.After the accident, the driver was chased by a group of neighbors led by the father of the baby.
When he was caught, they beat him and stoned him to death, and he died in the hospital a few hours later.
Police are investigating the case and have arrested the father of the baby. They also are trying to confirm whether the taxi driver was drunk, although witnesses say he hit the victims when he swerved to miss a pothole.
This is a huge story in Argentina right now. If you read Spanish, check out Clarin’s coverage, which includes video.

Authorities are investigating the gruesome murder of a Latino family in St. Lucie, central Florida.
Two adults and two children were found shot to death Friday along an isolated stretch of a Florida highway, with the woman clutching the two children in an apparent attempt to protect them, authorities said.Florida Highway Patrol troopers got a call Friday morning after someone spotted the bodies of a man, woman, boy and girl off the southbound shoulder of the highway, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said.
The adults were both in their 20s or 30s, and the children appeared to be between the ages of 4 and 6, Sheriff Ken Mascara said. All had been shot multiple times, he said.
“It appears to be a Hispanic family,” Mascara said. “The female had both the children clutched in a defensive mode, in an attempt to protect them. It gives the appearance that they were a family traveling.”
The bodies were found relatively close to the freeway, and no car was located, though authorities say that tire marks show that a car was driven off the road. At the time of this post, the victims’ identities remain unknown.

For those of you that think that “la guerra sucia” — the “dirty war” — only occurred in South America, think again. While perhaps not as widespread and surely not as publicized, police and government engaged in tortuous acts and murder against regular Mexican citizens who were thought to be enemies of the state. The BBC talks about a report produced for President Fox’s eyes only, but leaked by an American NGO:
A US NGO has printed material saying Mexicans had a right to know. The army kidnapped, tortured and killed hundreds of rebel suspects, says the report, which covers 1964 to 1982.

Michael Morales was set to become the first Latino executed in California since the death penalty was reinstated in the 70s. Last night, he had what he believed would be his last meal, and probably didn’t sleep through what he thought was to be his last night on earth. Today, he was to take a lethal injection and die. But that didn’t happen. Anesthesiologists who were to assist in the execution claimed that there was too great a possibility that Morales return to consciousness during the procedure, prolonging suffering:
Doctors said the ruling raised serious questions about the possibility of having to intervene in the execution “if any evidence of either pain or a return to consciousness arose.”
