Tomorrow night, MTV, mtvU, LOGO and MTV Tr3s will premiere Pedro, a movie about the life of “The Real World’s” Pedro Zamora. Here’s a sneak peek:

I remember when the Real World actually seemed real and Pedro’s season was one of them. Pero no se, just based on the clip, it does look pretty poorly acted. So why will I be watching anyway? Pedro Zamora was first-ever openly gay, HIV-positive main character on TV and he was Latino involved in an interracial relationship so his presence on TV was historic and the issues raised important. He was an activist and educator. His family fiercely loved him and I remember being impressed by those aspects of his life. And the film is being aired not just as a memorial biopic, pero in an effort to encourage young people to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases as April is STD Awareness Month.

Pedro, was written by Dustin Lance Black who wrote Milk, and I already explored some of my issues with that film.

I’ll watch and let you know my thoughts on Thursday.
Will you be watching? Why or why not?

Some of you might be a tad too young to remember, but back in 1994, MTV’s The Real World actually retained some element of real, and was actually a pretty engaging show (note: there were actually people with brains in the house). The San Francisco edition was one of its highest points, mainly due to the groundbreaking things that were going on on the show: 21 year old Cubano Pedro Zamora emerged as the first openly gay HIV-positive man to appear on American television, and in following Pedro’s life and death, U.S. TV viewers finally got to know someone living with HIV.

Alex Loynaz stars as earnest Real World cast-member Pedro Zamora in this intimate biopic tracing the HIV-positive immigrant’s rise from humble roots to becoming one of the most instantly recognizable HIV/AIDS activists in the United States as a result of his high profile role on MTV’s pioneering reality… television series. In 1992, The Real World made it’s debut on MTV, forever altering the definition of the term “celebrity,” and providing a sympathetic face to the growing AIDS crisis for the millions of Americans who had yet to meet someone suffering from the devastating autoimmune disorder.

While the show was great, what MTV has got up its sleeve now doesn’t look like it’s going to do it much justice. “Pedro: The Movie” actually looks pretty terrible if the trailers are to be believed (check them out here). MTV movies are infamously bad, so I guess you can’t expect much more, but I would have preferred Pedro’s story be told by a good filmmaker with…a budget. When you check out the trailer, you’ll know what I mean. But before that, check out the clip above of The Real World San Francisco to get a sense of who Pedro was.

Pedro: The Movie is set to air on MTV on April 1st.

Viacom Appeals to My Kid Over Time Warner Takedown

custom_1230717134723_MK-AT695_VIACOM_G_20081230205910.jpgI’m trying to get my children to care about important things, pero this morning, Viacom was successful in working my 11 year up about Time Warner Cable getting rid of Viacom stations like MTV, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon.

Apparently Viacom and Time Warner Cable have been negotiating over fees for months, and haven’t been able to reach a deal. Viacom said it wants an increase of somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 cents per month, per subscriber across all channels, including Nickelodeon, VH1 and MTV.

So this morning, as my older daughter watches Spongebob Squarepants, a little scrolling message informs her that Time Warner is evil is going to take her cartoons away. Mind you, we don’t have Time Warner Cable, but her grandmother does.

According to Despierta America on Univision being in their home country of Mexico didn’t mean that Mana and Belinda, who won two awards out of her five nominations, were spared being booed.

Mexico City to welcome MTV Latin Music Awards

2:40 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Events|Media|mexico|Music · Comments Off

mtvtu6.gifMexico City is becoming a destination for high-profile events. Most recently, the Mexican capital was the site of the Miss Universe pageant, and last year the MTV Latin Music Awards. This year the awards will be back in the Distrito Federal, something that makes the city’s mayor very proud:

“For the second time we’re going to have the awards here in Mexico City….it’s the only city that’s hosted the awards for two years,” said Ebrard congratulating himself.

Calm yourself, it’s not the Oscars. But it does sound like it’s shaping up to be a memorable show. Cafe Tacuba is said to be headlining, and the city will set up 16 giant screens all over the city so that everyone can watch on October 18th.

You can’t blame Ebrard for being happy. According to Peru’s RPP, the awards are supposed to bring in $30 million for the city.

521804.jpgMexico City’s Palacio de los Deportes was the site of the MTV Latin Music Awards last night, which held more than a few surprises for viewers. The biggest: British pop star Robbie Williams showed the world his butt:

Williams, who took home the award for best international pop artist last night, mooned the crowd of around 10,000 people during his performance of his song “Rock DJ.”

Unfortunately, since we don’t have MTV TR3S and therefore weren’t able to see the awards, you’ll have to settle for just a rundown of winners.

Best Solo Artist:
Julieta Venegas
Best Group or Duet: Panda
Best Pop Artist: Kudai
Best Rock Artist: Mana
Best Alternative Artist: Panda
Best Pop Artist – International: Robbie Williams
Best Rock Artist – International: My Chemical Romance
Best New Artist – International: James Blunt
Best New Artist – North: Allison
Best New Artist – Central: Fonseca
Best New Artist – South: Axel
Best Artist – Central: Juanes
Best Artist – South: Gustavo Cerati
Breakthrough Artist: Panda
Promising Artist: Calle 13
MTV Tr3s Viewer’s Choice Award: Don Omar
Song of the Year: Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean – “Hips Don’t Lie”
Video of the Year: Mana – “Labios Compartidos”
Artist of the Year: Daddy Yankee
MTV Legend Award: Mana

Surprising: Julieta Venegas was nominated for six awards but received only one, the one I expected to be bestowed upon Shakira.

Not surprising: Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie as Song of the Year

Does MTV Tr3 Deliver All It Promises?

10:09 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Marketing|Music|TV · 7 Comments

26 Sep 2006

mtv.jpgYesterday MTV Tr3 went live with much hype. The channel formally known as MTV Espanol promises to be the music canal with bilingual sabor, its own programming and its own VJ’s for Latinos like me, who speak English and Spanish and like our media that way.

The MTV shows “My Super Sweet 16″ and “Pimp My Ride” will be offered, along with “Quiero Mis Quinces,” a show about quinceañera parties, and “Pimpeando,” which shows off car culture. Subtitles will appear when Spanish is spoken.

While I have yet to see the offerings for myself (my cable co. doesn’t carry MTV Tr3), the offerings don’t sound that original. When I did watch MTV Espanol, it was to hear and watch some of my favorite Latino artists that I couldn’t see anywhere else, not to watch people act the reality tv fool.

I could count the Latinos presente at the awards on my hands, including Ms. Jennifer Lopez looking oh not so pregnant, in spite of rumores, in a short gold dress and matching head wrap that made her look, in the words of my mami, “a space cadet”. I think we all breathed a Boricua collective sigh of relief when she didn’t sing with hubby Marc Anthony. I’m happy she caught herself saying “masterpeach” cuz that was gonna be my headline for this morning.

28_liv_jlo_photo_04-28-2006_V16GV5C.jpgJLo graces the cover of this year’s People en Español 50 Most Beautiful People issue, which hits newsstands this coming Monday. In the issue, JLo reveals:

“I’ve never tried to hide the fact that I’m Latina,” the Bronx-native tells the magazine. “I think that’s why Hispanics are like ‘she’s ours … she belongs to us.’ And that’s true; with the Latino community, I am theirs, I do belong to them.”

Jenny’s still from the block, big whoop. The more interesting chisme is that she might get her own reality show on MTV:

Singer/actress Jennifer Lopez is reportedly in talks with MTV brass to develop a weekly reality show, which will specifically revolve around her own life.

The show is supposed to be a close reflection of Lopez’s life, and will focus on various facets of her life including helping dancers who are trying to make it big in the industry.

The producers are still working on the exact theme of the show, but sources reveal that the groundwork is on in full swing.
