JLo Does Dallas

8:14 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Movies · 2 Comments

16 Mar 2006

dallasCastStoria.jpgNope, it’s not the porn movie you’ve been dreaming of. JLo actually is going to do Dallas — the TV show – on the big screen. And she’s gonna play Sue Ellen!

If the latest story to be churned out of the rumour mill is correct, the Latino diva is set to play Sue Ellen Ewing in the big-screen version of Dallas.

A US mag reckons director Robert Luketic is finalising his key cast members with Jen set to join John Travolta, Owen Wilson and Shirley MacLaine.

I totally see JLo more as Pam. And wait, that cast is just…weird. I mean Dallas was pure drama, and that ensemble says comedy (if anything) to me.

Predictable: Travolta will be J.R. Ick. Not so predictable: Owen Wilson is Bobby.

I wonder who will play Miss Ellie and Jock? Or Cliff?

Dude, who cares…this is going to totally suck.

Gael García Bernal: El Director

6:35 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|mexico|Movies · 1 Comment

27 Feb 2006

Gael-Garcia.jpgMexican actor Gael García Bernal is branching out. In December, Mala reported that in addition to his acting, Gael was a spokesperson for the international humanitarian organization Oxfam. Now it seems that the muli-faceted Gael will show yet another of his faces — that of director:

Mexican actor García Bernal will begin shooting this week on his first film as a director, in which he will also act as protagonist.

The project was born a few months back as a made for TV movie , but with time Gael managed to get financing to turn it into a feature film.

…The film is about a group of young people, children of rich parents, who think they know everything and have everything, but who after a journey discover they have nothing.

Sounds intriguing, and a break from typical Mexican film plots of late. Best of luck, Gael!

bard4.jpgSpanish uber-hottie Javier Bardem has been tapped to star in the film version of Gabriel García Márquez‘s “Love in the Time of Cholera”:

En su rol, Bardem personificará a un romántico joven que pierde a la mujer de sus sueños por culpa de un millonario que logra conquistarla. Y que durante los siguientes 50 años se empecina en lograr estatus y reputación con la esperanza de algún día tenerla.

Bardem will play the starring role in the film, after producers finally convinced Garcia Marquez to allow his book to be adapted for film. Filming starts this year in Central and South American locations.

Bardem is the first Spaniard ever to be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, for his portrayal of Cuban exile poet Reinaldo Arenas in Before Night Falls.

Latino character actor dies

1:41 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Entertainment · Comments Off

15 Feb 2006

pedro001.jpgPedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, an early Latino performer in TV and film, died last week in Arizona at the age of 80. Gonzalez Gonzalez was a fixture in John Wayne movies and was often accused of perpetuating negative Latino stereotypes in his performances.

The films with Wayne, among them “The High and the Mighty,” “Rio Bravo” and “Hellfighters,” and guest appearances on such TV series as “Gunsmoke” made Gonzalez Gonzalez one of the most recognizable Mexican-American actors at the time.

Because he often played sterotypical roles, had a heavy accent and frequently served as comic relief, Gonzalez Gonzalez was criticized in later years as perpetuating negative Latino images.

But his grandson said Gonzales Gonzales took what roles were available.

Golden Globes: Any Latinos Out There?

5:24 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Entertainment|Movies|TV · Comments Off

16 Jan 2006

altkurec1.jpgI am excited about watching the Golden Globes tonight. I don’t know how it happened, but I went from totally hating awards shows to becoming obsessed with them when I hit 26 years of age. I think this might be an indication of a sharp decline in my social life. Or something.

Anyway, I was curious to know if there were any Latino nominees on the list this year, so I went to the web site. The first name on the list, Maria Bello, seemed promising. After checking the IMDB I find that the actress is actually Polish-Italian.

myfamily.jpg“What type of films do Latinos want to see?” That is a question that I ask myself all the time. Are Latinos in the United States genuinely interested in films about Latinos or would they rather just watch the typical Hollywood movie? For those Latinos that speak mostly Spanish would they like the option to watch English language movies with subtitles? Would these Latinos consider watching movies made by Latinos that touch on Latino themes?

We really need to make a concerted effort to support Latino movies so that films about Latinos continue to get made.

Latino movies, done in the United States and geared for our consumption before heading out to parts unknown and DVD, are not blockbusters. That is due to the fact that while they might be great films, most folks don’t see them. Why? Small budgets. This leads to small, unimpressive special effects or none at all, thus their unpopularity.

jlo.jpg You can’t get one over on la Lopez. An extra on the set of the Hector Lavoe movie, El Cantante was singled out by Jennifer Lopez and thrown off the New York City set. This was no ordinary extra though. The extra was Angel Villagómez, a bochinche reporter from Escándalo TV, a gossip show on the Telefutura network. JLo recognized Villagómez and asked that he be removed from the set.
