26 Oct 2010Con la Vista al Voto : From now until election day 2010, VivirLatino is going to have at least one post a day looking at the midterm elections and issues around the election including policy and the much hyped Latino vote.
Just a week away from the midterm elections an Republicans across the United States are pulling out all the stops, that is appealing to the lowest common denominator by representing all immigrants as Latinos and Latinos as criminals, hellbent on riding in limos and denying little white children access to the English language.
Think I’m exaggerating? Look at Louisiana Senator David Vitter’s ad. Then we have Republican Senate candidate in Nevada, Sharron Angle who can’t tell the difference between Latinos and Asians (and those that may be both) when speaking to Latino youth, but seems to be crystal clear as to who (white) families need to blame and be afraid of.

20 Oct 2010I have been critical of the expectation of the Latino vote as some life changing revolutionary force. I have been equally critical of those who see Latinos not voting Democrat as an act of laziness and apathy as opposed to an act of protest.
But let me be clear, those who would use the agency of Latinos who decide not to vote or who decide not to vote Democrat as a way to further divide along the lines of race and divert our eyes from the real enemies of Latino communities, well that’s just dirty and they aren’t representative of Latinos who want movement.
Watching this video ad, the Spanish version is slated to run in Nevada, and hearing that it comes from an org named “Latinos for Reform” you might think, damn they have a point and I’m down for reform.
Except Latinos for Reform is run by a Robert Deposada, a conservative Republican political consultant whose vision of reform doesn’t line up with the needs of Latinos.

6 Oct 2010Let’s get this out of the way.
Yes, the Republicans as a party have shown nothing but contempt for Latinos, especially immigrant Latinos, LGBT Latinos, poor Latinos and all the intersections and iterations of the aforementioned.
Is that enough for Latinos to run to the polls and vote Democrat in less than a month? All signs point to no. Polls abound pointing that the mythical Latino voter supports the Democratic party in theory but aren’t convinced enough to keep the Dems in office.
And why would that be?
It’s a little too easy to merely point out the fact that the Obama administration has failed to cumplir it’s promesa to the Latino community on comprehensive immigration reform. To rely on that as the reason to not vote/not vote Dem, makes the Latino electorate look irresponsible and passes blame onto the voter. Rather, perhaps the media who is sounding alarm bells about the lack of Latino loyalty and will should look at what the Democrats have done against immigrant communities.

Yesterday Arizona voters helped three proposals targetting undocumented immigrants and one English only proposal pass by about a three-to-one margin statewide. Prop. 100 denies bail to undocumented immigrants charged with felonies. Prop. 102 prohibits undocumented immigrants from being awarded punitive damages in any civil lawsuit filed in the state. Eligibility of illegal immigrants to file for compensatory damages is not affected. Propositions 300 prohibits undocument immigrants from receiving in-state tuition, financial assistance or access to state-subsidized childcare and family literacy programs. It will also require the Board of Education, community colleges, universities and the Department of Economic Security to report any illegal immigrants who try to apply for those programs. Prop. 103 declares English the official language.

Whenever election day rolls around I am reminded of a few things. One is that imfamous phrase, “The Latino Swing Vote“. This idea, that Latinos because of our sheer numbers can make or break an elecion has led to positives like non-partisan voter registration drives and has led to negatives like politicians pandering to “Latino interests” with a slew of commercials of them speaking really bad Spanish or with Latino celebs/politicos singing Que Linda Manita. I am reminded of Malcolm X’s famous speech, The Ballot or the Bullet. I am reminded of the late Richie Perez and how he always said that there are many weapons at our disposal for revolution and voting is one of those tools.
