Estefano, the acclaimed Colombian songwriter known for his collaborations with artists such as Gloria Estefan, Marc Anthony and Thalia, among others, was shot last Friday at his own home, presumably in a planned hit. EFE reports today that the artist remains in stable but critical condition:
The songwriter is in Intensive Care at Jackson Memorial Hospital [Miami] and, according to physicians, his life is not in danger, unless unexpected complications arise. A spokesperson for the police said that they are investigating under what circumstances the shooting, which occurred at the mansion of the producer in the exclusive Venetian Causeway area, took place.
Estefano was reportedly shot in the chest and the head by his handyman, Francisco Oliveira, who was delivering marijuana to the songwriter. Oliveira has since been arrested.

Details are still sketchy (and probably will never become clear) and the incident is still fresh in our minds. Yesterday, an “American citizen” (for whatever reason, media is obsessed with this detail), a Latino man, was gunned down by federal air marshals at Miami International Airport.
Did he really say he had a bomb? Did authorities truly feel threatened? We’ll probably never know. But this reminds us that our policy in this country is to shoot first and ask questions later, at the expense of the life of someone who could be mentally ill.

As the Miami New Times cover shows in this post’s photo, Wilma is not one of our favorites down here. In Miami, exactly one week after Hurricane Wilma hit, I am reflecting on what went well and what didn’t.

Our readers might have noticed a decrease in posts in the last couple of days. As many of you know, I am located in Miami, which recently got a good hit from Hurricane Wilma.
The eye of Hurricane Wilma crossed the state of Florida in just 6 hours on Monday, and with that, I believe that about 4 million homes across the state lost power. In just Miami, Broward, & Palm Beach counties here in South Florida, we still have about 2.4 million homes/businesses without power. (I’m one of them.) But I’m one of the lucky ones. I have water, and I don’t have to boil it before I drink it, as most people in Broward & Miami Beach do. I didn’t have my windows blown out from the pressure or flying debris. My roof didn’t collapse. But many others weren’t so fortunate.

Sometimes it’s hard for Latino adults to figure out what race box to check off on official forms and in life in general. Imagine how hard it must be for a Latino child to navigate a racial system that is pretty much divided into just black and white. If you’re having a hard time remembering what it felt like being in between as a Latino child in the U.S., Linda Nieves-Powell will remind you with her film, Mimi’s Portrait. The 8 minute digital short was written, produced, and directed by Nieves-Powell and is based on her own personal experiences of moving from the inner city to the suburbs of Long Island and having to choose between being either black or white.
The film will be featured today, Columbus Day observed, at 5 pm. as part of the Downtown Film Festival in Staten Island, NYC at Cargo Café, 120 Bay Street. It will also be featured in Miami as part of the 4th Annual Miami Short Film Festival from October 24th to October 29th 2005.
When Nieves-Powell isn’t making movies, she’s running Latino Flavored Productions Inc., an English language multimedia entertainment company. She was recently named by Hispanic Business Magazine as one of the 100 Influential Hispanics. She is also the writer, director and producer of the hit play YO SOY LATINA! , now touring nationally across college campuses.
So if you’re still confused as to where you stand as a Latino living between two worlds, maybe Nieves-Powell and her powerful work will show you how to create your own space and discover yourself.
VivirLatino is a daily publication published by Mamita Mala Media, dedicated to featuring all the latest politics, culture, entertainment of interest to the diverse Latin@ diaspora.
