The Spanish Food Safety Agency (AESA) is threatening to take action against Burger King for violating an agreement between the Spanish Health Ministry and the fast food chain in which it promised not to use advertising to promote “large portions”. According to 20 Minutos, the agreement is a Spanish Health Ministry initiative to help bring down obesity rates in the country.
Apparently the BK is not holding up its end of the bargain, launching a new campaign a couple of weeks ago to promote their gargantuan “XXL Burger” (with a whopping 971 calories) in Spain, an initiative that was denounced by consumer groups and has caused polemic among health-related public entities.
Now just weeks after that controversy, it appears that Burger King is pushing the envelope yet again, with advertising supporting its new “Triple Whopper”, which boasts a mere 820 calories and three beef patties. Barf.
Latinos like a good cup of coffee and generally we don’t want to spend Starbuck’s prices to get one, pero is McDonald’s coffee something the Latino population really wants? The fast-food chain is banking on it, using Pan-Latin star chef Douglas RodrÃguez as its messenger. According to HispanicAd RodrÃguez:…
…was tapped by McDonald’s Restaurants of the New York/ New Jersey/Connecticut tri-state area to appear on various Spanish radio programs in the New York vicinity and brought along McDonald’s Premium Roast Coffee for his hosts.

Just in time for the Superbowl Batanga.com has teamed up with Hispanic Media Inc. and McDonald’s to launch the first online Spanish language site focusing on Latinos in the National Football League. The site contains info on the history of Latinos in the NFL and has stats and multimedia content on Latinos currently playing in the NFL. Marketing the Mickey D’s is a big part of the endeavor as golden arches are prominent on the site. According to the press release:
HMI and McDonalds recognize the growing interest in the NFL amongst US Hispanics and created this online channel to celebrate Latinos, past and present, who have play important roles in this great sport.

I hardly watch any television channels besides ESPN and Comedy Network but the other day I happened to catch a commercial on Univision that just goes to show the overcommercialization of everything. It started off as your typical McDonalds commercial with their annoying catch phrase “i’m lovin’ it” then it went into a dream sequence with Mexica (Aztec) warriors playing Tlachtli, a game similar to today’s basketball.
Now, what do the Mexica or Aztecs, whatever your preference is, have to do with McDonalds? Last time I checked there were no McDonalds back in those days. No matter how much Wal-mart tries to convince itself that its alright to build one of their superstores next to Teotihuacán it is NOT. No matter how much McDonalds tries to sell its burgers to Latinos it is NOT ok for them use our cultural heritage as a vehicle to make them richer and make us fatter.
Next thing you know the Virgencita de Guadalupe, the dearest of symbols to many Latinos will end up in a McDonalds commercial.

And well-deserved. It seems the founder of an anti-immigration group from Connecticut got his — yes, I’ll say it: just desserts, and it wasn’t a “Mexdonald’s” hot apple pie either (too bad)…
The co-founder of an anti-immigration group in Connecticut demanded Wednesday that government officials investigate the “disproportionate” hiring of “Hispanics” at McDonald’s restaurants after presenting what he had privately described to group members as his “MexDonald’s” study.
Paul F. Streitz, a marketing consultant and author from Darien, issued his call after recovering from being hit in the head with a cream pie thrown by an unidentified white man, who immediately ran from the room Streitz had rented in the West Hartford Public Library.
The author of the “assault” is described as “an unidentified white man”.
