This past Saturday, May 1st, thousands rallied and marched across the country celebrating May Day and celebrating the immigrants that work hard in the United States. Pero, understanding that there is work to be done, against a series of anti-immigrant and anti-Latino laws passed in Arizona and for real comprehensive immigration reform.

I was at Union Square this May Day, as I have been for the past three May Days. The message was clear from the young people and families that filled the park and then filled blocks as they marched downtown towards Foley Square. The message was a push back against Arizona but also a push back against the REPAIR proposal put forth by Democratic Senators biometric Chuck Schumer (NY), Robert Menendez (NJ), and Harry Reid (NV).

What Are You Doing for May Day?

May Day was the deadline that many immigration advocates put out there as the deadline for a comprehensive immigration reform bill to be put on the table. The 26 page Democratic proposal released yesterday should be an unacceptable option for justice loving people and there are marches and events planned all over the country (and all over the world- May Day is an international holiday after all).

Here in NY, I am hosting my own May Day eve vigil in solidarity con la comunidad de Arizona and against SB1070.

On Saturday I’ll be bouncing between the Union Square, NYC rally and the one at Foley Plaza, both scheduled to jump off at noon.

Reform Immigration For America has a listing of marches and rallies being held across the country. To find one near you visit them here.
See you at the marchas!

You may have noticed that I didn’t post on Friday, May Day. It wasn’t cuz I was being lazy. I was in Union Square, NYC with my daughters, at the May Day Rally and March for Immigrants.

The number of people at the rally this year was much smaller than last year, and I’m sure the sudden downpour didn’t help. Pero the energy of the people that were there was strong, especially the many Latino workers and community members who were there, singing, chanting, and dancing.

I put together this little slideshow cosita con musica de Lila Downs. And yes, that is amigo Kaieating an empanada during the march. And yes those are my chicas at the end.

Enjoy.

P.S : i have some video clips that I will share soon as well.

Were you at any May Day Immigrant events? Tell us.

If you are in NYC, there is still time to get to the May Day March

MASS RALLY for IMMIGRANT & WORKER RIGHTS

Thursday May 1st
12 p.m. Gather at Union Square
14th Street and Broadway
4 p.m. Rally & March

May Day 2008 is critically important. Will the optimism and hope expressed around the Presidential elections translate into an end of immigrant raids & deportations? Will it bring an end to the foreclosures of homes, the lowering of gas and food prices, or an end to lay-offs?

Whatever the outcome in November, the May 1st Coalition for Immi grant and Worker Rights will be marching once again on May Day, International Workers Day, to say no to all the attacks against workers here and around the world.

We call on the progressive community, the anti-war movement, the women’s & lgbt movement, and especially on the labor movement, to come out for May Day 2008. March for solidarity, because an injury to one is an injury to all!

We say:
Black, Latino, Asian, Indigenous, Arab, White—In Unity there is strength.
ICE raids are racist, anti-union, and violate immigrant & US workers civil rights & divide families.
Jobs & homes, not lay-offs & foreclosures. Stop demolition of public housing in New Orleans & everywhere.
No war in Iraq, bring the troops home now.
Political asylum for Victor Toro, No deportation of Flor Crisóstomo.
Money for levees in New Orleans, not for militarizing the US/Mexico border.
Repeal NAFTA. US trade agreements force migration & lay-offs.

lapolice.jpgWhile most of the rallies held around the country in defense of immigrant rights were peaceful, the march in Los Angeles ended with police firing rubber bullets and using their batons against protesters.

Several people, including about a dozen officers, were hurt during skirmishes at MacArthur Park near downtown late Tuesday. About 10 people were taken to hospitals for treatment of injuries including cuts, authorities said. None of the injuries was believed to be serious. The clash at MacArthur Park started after 6 p.m. when police tried to disperse demonstrators who had moved off the sidewalk onto the street. Authorities said several people of the few thousand still at the rally threw rocks and bottles at officers, who fired rubber bullets and used batons to push the crowd back onto the sidewalk.
“(Police) started moving in and forcing them out of the park, people with children, strollers,” said Angela Sambrano, one of the rally’s organizers.
