For who? For Julia Roberts.
That’s what Maradona said yesterday at the Cannes Film Festival, where he was helping promote a new documentary about his life, by director Emir Kusturica.
“Me cortaría la mano de Dios por Julia Roberts”. He went on to say that “There’s no other woman for me: Julia Roberts.” Ugh.
We knew that Diego wasn’t perfect, but never thought he’d have such bad taste.

Maradona might be considered an untouchable demigod in his home country of Argentina, but the embattled soccer star has fallen from grace in the eyes of some in Argentina’s Jewish community because of a controversial comment. La mano de Dios was quoted as saying that he wants to meet the president of Iran: “I’ve already met (Hugo) Chávez and Fidel (Castro). Now the only one I’ve still got to meet is their [the Iranian] president. I want to meet Ahmadineyad.”
The comment was not well-received by the Jewish community, which
…”strongly laments” the words of ex-soccer player Diego Maradona in favor of Iran and hopes that “he rectifies [the situation]“, said the secretary of the Israeli and Argentine Mutual Association (AMIA), Edgardo Gorenber.“We are admirers of Maradona as a player and we strongly lament his expressing his opinion on such delicate an issue as this one,” he said, after citing that in 1994 the AMIA was the target of a terrorist attack which left 85 dead and which the Jewish community attributes to terrorists protected by Iran.
“Diego is the most well-known Argentine in the world and our soccer embassador. It would be good to tell him the true story about how much pain [Iran] brought us 13 years ago,” said the Agencia Judía de Noticias.
I think the relative gentleness of this chiding of Maradona is a testament to how powerful he still is in Argentina. I doubt anyone else could get away with such statements as that one given the history of the relationship between Iran and Argentina and Ahmadinejad’s denial of the verity of the holocaust.

Ever the provocateur, soccer legend Diego Maradona says he wants to add a new face to his tattoo collection — which already features the visages of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara — la jeta de Hugo Chávez:
Diego Maradona said today that he wishes to get a tattoo of the president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, after having branded his skin with the faces of Cuban leader Fidel Castro and Argentine-Cuban guerrillero Ernesto “Che” Guevara.“I would really like to tattoo myself with something of Chávez,”said Maradona in the northern province of Tucumán, where he was playing a game of “showbol”, a type of indoor soccer between veteran players from Argentina and Paraguay.
Maradona also told reporters that he’s doing well and wants to extend his radio show from Buenos Aires to other parts of Argentina, and invite people like singer Chayanne on “so that they can be seen by all Argentines”. Something tells me Chayanne is already pretty popular in Argentina without Maradona’s help.

Maradona never stops giving us stuff to write about. He’s like the Latino version of Lindsay Lohan (except extremely talented in a God-like way, mind you); from rehab to tax evasion, Diego is the kind of guy bloggers like to have around. This weekend was not different, as we received word that Maradona is now considered a fugitive by Argentina authorities for failing to appear in court 5 times for a hearing.
The reason for the hearing is even better: according to Argentina’s La Opinión Digital, Maradona ran his car up onto a sidewalk, hit a phone booth, injuring a young couple, then fled the scene. It’s reported that La mano de Dios might be apprehended by police when he returns from Colombia where he is undergoing “cosmetic dental surgery”.
La Opinión also reports that Maradona, in classic celebrity style, denies that he was in the car at the time of the accident.
Late last month Maradona made headlines for declaring that he “hates everything that comes from the United States.”

A couple of weeks ago we told you that soccer legend Diego Maradona had been admitted to a Buenos Aires hospital for acute hepatitis, a result of heavy alcohol consumption. Now his doctors are saying that La mano de Dios can leave the hospital, but will have to check into a psychiatric facility to continue his treatment, something that it seems Maradona does not want to do. According to his physician:
“He’s more communicative. He’s accepting things and is aware of the seriousness of his current state, but we are still trying to convince him that he needs to go to a psychiatric clinic. He can’t be convinced in one day, as he’s very “special”, said Cahe.

While many of us in the U.S. are ramping up to tax time, soccer legend Diego Maradona is dealing with some tax issues of his own. Apparently La mano de Dios is having his records reviewed by Argentine tax authorities, who are requesting records from all of the banks with which he has accounts.
This isn’t the first time Maradona has been in trouble with tax authorities:
In 2006, Italian police stripped the star of two Rolex watches during a visit to Naples, in line with a judicial order requiring payment of a reported 31 million Euros (40 million dollars) worth of back taxes in Italy.
Juan Gabriel, Paquita la del Barrio, Paulina Rubio, and now Maradona. What is it with celebrities not paying their taxes? These people are in the better position to pay their taxes than the rest of us, but they still don’t. Why?

Legendary futbolista Diego Maradona is anything shy about his opinion. True to form, La mano de Dios is telling it like it is with respect to his opinion on Dubya’s twins sporting the jersey of the Boca Juniors, his beloved team:
Diego Maradona said Thursday that he’s a “a little distant” with the Boca Juniors team and criticized its president, Mauricio Macri, “because he put the shirt” of the Argentine team “on the daughters” of the U.S. head of state, George W. Bush.“I’ve distanced myself from them. There are things I didn’t like and I say so,” said the star.
Maradona questions the welcome that Macri gave the twins, Barbara and Jenna Bush, who went to Boca’s stadium in November to see a local team play, and were photographed with the gold and blue shirt.
To add insult to injury, the twins were seated in Macri’s box during the game, and just a couple of yards away from Maradona who, according the 20 Minutos, was sporting a hat worn by his homey, Fidel Castro.
