Shout Out y Gracias to Northeastern’s LASO

Role%20of%20Latin%20Women%20%285%29.jpgIf there was any doubt in my mind about the up and coming generation of Latino leaders being unleashed into the world, those doubts were put to rest last night by the amazingly intelligent and energetic members of Northeastern University’s Latin American Student Organization (LASO).

Last night I was in Boston and was honored to speak with college Latinos about Latina identity politics. We labeled ourselves and examined labels put on us as Latinos by the mainstream media and politicians, we explored the dynamics of Latina identity in terms of the intersection of race, ethnicity, and gender and we talked about how all of those are rooted in a specific history and cultural context.

I may be exhausted from my trip, where I was jostled through the Boston public transit system, pero interacting with such an amazing group of promising rising leaders left me inspired and thoughtful with how to move forward cuz we know each generation moves the struggle ahead.

Pa’lante and mil gracias to the gracious team that made it happen and to all that came out and participated last night.

4695_bPrevost%2BX3-45_BoltBus.jpgHopefully this will be the last trip of the year for yours truly. As I write this, I am on a bus from NYC to Boston (yay for wifi on the Bolt Bus). This evening, at 6 pm, I have the honor of speaking at Northeastern University gracias to the lovely gente of their Latin American Student Organization (LASO). I will specifically speak on Latina identity politics. So if you’re in the Boston area you should come through. It will be fun and interesting.

CoronaPlazaEvent2007.jpgVivirLatino’s own Maegan la Mala is at it again, opening her big Puerto Rican mouth to speak truth and no doubt make someone angry. Tonight I will be in Boston, in an event sponsored by the Center for New Words, speaking about Radical Mami’hood.

Gabriela%20037.jpgSome of you might have noticed (of course you have) that our beloved Mala has been absent lately. Well, she was on a temporary hiatus from blogging to bring you VL’s very first bebé. Wasn’t that nice of her?

La ChileRican #2, Gabriela Paula Paredes Ortiz was born on January 16th at 1:07 pm in NYC, weighing in at an adorable 6 lbs. 12 oz. and measuring a charming 20 inches.

We are happy to have our Mala back and to welcome our first VL baby into the world.

Felicidades to mami, papi, and big sis! And special thanks to El Gossiper for filling in for Mala.

Hear Mamita Mala on NPR’s Latino USA

282035459_m.jpgVL East Coast Editor Mamita Mala was a guest on NPR’s Latino USA radio show yesterday talking about the Latino vote in this year’s elections. Mala threw down with a Latina republican who claims that “Latinos are Republicans, they just don’t know it yet” and talked about how many Latino young people disenfranchised by both political parties. Check out the show on the Latino USA website.

If you are listening to the complete show, you can hear Mala after Univision’s Maria Elena Salinas‘ take on Latino voter intimidation. Immediately after the Latino vote segment, you can hear authors Carolina Gonzalez and Seth Kugel talk about their new book, Nueva York: The Complete Guide to Latino Life in the Five Boroughs, which I am totally buying.

And if you’ve never heard it before, Latino USA is a great show. It should be required weekly listening.

150748864_a585420b74_m.jpgWe all knew that Mamita Mala (otherwise known as VL’s very own Maegan Ortiz) was hot, but it was high time we got some third party validation. Well, folks, that day has come, as la Mala herself has been chosen as one of the REAL hot 100.

The REAL hot 100 is:

The REAL hot 100 is a list featuring young women from around the country who are breaking barriers, fighting stereotypes, and making a difference in their communities or the nation.

This project will not only combat the popular notion that all young women have to offer is their ability to appeal to men, but it will also highlight the important — but often overlooked — work young women are doing.

That’s right, folks. Being “hot” goes way beyond the surface and our Mala is all that and a bag-o-papas. From the REAL hot 100 site:

Who is she?

Maegan Elizabeth Ortiz aka “la Mala”, 28, Rego Park, NY
