Makeshift RecLAmation in Southern California Featuring Many VivirLatino Friends and Mala!

I am so excited to write about this because the Southern Cali portion of the tour includes so many people I love…yes myself included. So blessed that this will be my West Coast debut in such an amazingly well curated space.

For those that don’t know:

Makeshift Reclamation: New Feminist Art and Activism
A multimedia event showcasing how contemporary feminists are resisting and creating alternatives to not only gender-based oppression but also a collapsing economic system, climate crisis, and more. Featuring live readings, performances, and video works by artists and activists including Jessica Hoffmann, coeditor/copublisher of the independent, transnational, antiracist feminist magazine make/shift; Hilary Goldberg, whose new project, recLAmation, is a Super 8 experimental documentary/narrative film in which queer superheroes navigate a future beyond capitalism; and others.

I am beyond honored and excited to be participating in the NYC leg of the Make/shift recLAmation tour, tonight at Barnard Hall, 6:30 pm, James Room, 4th Floor.

I will be sharing space with Adele Nieves, Hilary Goldberg, Jessica Hoffmann, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, y Mariana Ruiz

And don’t stress if you can’t come tonight…we’re doing it all over again on Saturday at Bluestockings.

Coeditors/copublishers Jessica Hoffmann and Daria Yudacufski are heading east for a house party hosted by marvelous make/shift supporters Mariana Ruiz Firmat and Chad Jones. Join us for an evening of readings, food, and good company at a party to build community and benefit make/shift. Readings by Jen Benka, Blackamazon, Mariana Ruiz Firmat, Maegan “la Mala” Ortiz, and Masha Tupitsyn. Suggested donation of $5+ at the door. No one will be turned away for lack of funds, and those who donate $20 or more will receive a subscription to make/shift.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about the whole make/shift crew and the amazing work they all do. So if you can come, represent, and support.

UTNE Reader released a list of 50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World and VivirLatino is proud that some dear amigas of ours are included.

brownfemipower, whose inimitable blog is the anchor of the pulsing women-of-color blogosphere, began posting three years ago. She writes emotionally and radiantly about gender violence, immigration raids, public housing demolition in New Orleans, sexuality (a recent post on this topic included a video of Aerosmith’s “Crying”), and other “out of bounds” issues, morphing feminism back into a force for social change—for everyone—rather than an “exclusive networking club.”

“Feminists can’t seem to figure out why their movement isn’t growing,” she wrote in June. “Could the fact that feminism uses universities as its major site of recruitment rather than jails, halfway houses, day care centers, churches, restaurants, the streets, mommy blog communities . . . have something to do with it?”
