21 Jan 2010The following is from a really important post by Sokari at Black Looks. It’s a little bit long, but it is very very worth the time it takes to read it. Please allow a little complication into mainstream media representations of what is happening in Haiti!
There is also the increased militarisation with thousands of additional UN forces and US military both of whom have a record of brutality in Haiti, and which can only intensify the suffering already being experienced. Again and again I spoke with women of all ages who reported acts of violence by the security forces, against them personally or their fathers, husbands and sons which has left them in even greater poverty. One of the most common themes I met with was the demand for the return of President Bertrand Aristide – the only Haitian leader to have to have been freely elected and who worked on behalf of the poor but was constantly undermined by the US and eventually removed with their consent.
What we are witnessing is an invasion of battalions of military personal, journalists and mega aid agencies which can often bring with them additional problems due to insensitivity, preconceived ideas of the country and a lack of gender analysis. See the Red Cross in Katrina and Christian Aid’s previous record in Haiti As one twitter asked – who is feeding them and on what? How much of the resources are they eating up? How much of their needs are preventing urgent medical equipment and food reaching the Haitian people? And all this so they can report that people are “scavenging” and “looting”, gorge on people’s misery. Write about the need to protect food from hungry people and hospitals from the wounded. A disgusting shameful spectacle – the real long term disaster is the one being set in place by yet more cultures of violence and greed.

10 Jul 2009So now we all have a big debate on our hands! Is U.S. president Barack Obama a totally slimy pig checking out a 17-year-old’s ass? Well, the media has *proof* that he indeed, might be!
Or…wait a minute…

I think it’s awesome that the results of some camera man fucking around with freeze frame controls can make news. My respect for mainstream media has just increased exponentially.
I wonder if anybody else besides me just realized that video about a non story about piggy world leaders is more important to mainstream news than pretty much every story VL has ever covered about coups, military interventions, immigration, violence against women….
This story was interesting to me–I wondered at what was not said. *What* masked men, specifically, committed this horrible atrocity? Were they somehow connected to the invasion of the U.S? And even more to the point, why could this boy’s injuries be taken care of in Iraq? Is it because the hospitals there have been so bombarded and their supplies so depleted that they simply are unable to help?
And considering that few Iraqi’s are actually allowed into the U.S., why was this boy? Was it because the U.S. knew that his story would make us all feel really darn good and happy that the U.S. is in Iraq, helping those poor, unmodern souls?
(to be clear, I am *extremely* happy that this child is getting the help he needs, and as far as I am concerned, it’s the *least* the U.S. can do for him–but at the same time, I think it’s vitally important to be critical of these feel good immigration stories. Why is it ok and actually a *good* thing for certain people to immigrate to the U.S. but not others? Why are certain parts of people’s immigration stories so radically dismissed or left out of the public sphere?)

If there’s one thing you can count on from mainstream media, it’s that it is really are incapable of covering anything remotely newsworthy or of immediate concern. Even as Mala points out that the media and public are being kept away from certain parts of Hurricane ravaged Texas and nobody seems to know what happened to the prisoners that were left to deal with the storm in prison–our trustworthy CNN is headlining O.J. Simpson’s trail. And the really sad thing is that even CNN admits Simpson’s trail may not be quite newsworthy, the headline of the story: O.J. Simpson arrives for ‘bad sequel’ robbery trial.
CNN, a question for you–if it’s a bad sequel, why are you showing it?? Most stations *cancel* those bad sequels rather than continually rebroadcasting them!
