Online Latino Magazines Are Hot

betterwords-340-Latinaoct.jpgWhile the digital divide between Latinos and whites may be growing, online Latino themed magazines are growing fast, among them Latina and People en Espanol.

Latina Media Ventures, publisher of English-language women’s monthly Latina, relaunched Latina.com in March 2006 and predicts that the site’s online advertising, estimated at $150,000 in 2005, will grow to close to $1 million this year.

This growth is explained by some by the fact that there are not as many Latino themed sites on the net as general sites.

I’m no believer in trickle down economics but I wonder if these numbers and $$$ will trickle down to VL or if it’s matter of fluffy, non-controversial topics interesting more people and attracting more $$$?

Magazines say little about Latinos

b4685683.jpgLast weekend I noticed that there were no less than 12 Latino-related stories in the New York Times‘ Sunday edition — from the Style section, to the Week in Review to just about every part of the paper. Not so the case with weekly news magazines, according to a study by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists:

A study commissioned by a Hispanic journalists’ association has found that the three main newsweekly magazines ran very few stories about Hispanics last year despite the growing importance of the Latino population.

The five-month study, due to be released Wednesday, found that only 18, or 1.2 percent, of the 1,547 stories that appeared last year in Time, Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report were predominantly about Latinos.

Hipsters Love Luny Tunes and Reggaeton

reggaeton.jpg The end of the year brings plenty of “best of” lists. The Hipster/Yuppie magazine New York Magazine came out with its best of list yesterday and it turns out hipsters love reggaeton. They especially love Luny Tunes who was chosen as the magazines number #3 Best Producer and they heart Daddy Yankee’s Gasolina that was chosen as one of the year’s best Pop Micro-Trends. I predict reggaeton nights to start at Williamsburg bars and lounges.

alicia_m.jpg On Monday the former Miss Universe, Alicia Machado, signed a contract with Playboy to pose naked in a February edition to be sold throughout the Americas.

The 1996 Miss Universe has dedicated her being photographed como Dios la trajo al mundo to Donald Trump who called her an “eating machine” when she gained weight after winning the beauty pageant.

Cristina la revista gets the ax

june_cover_i.jpgCristina Saralegui — the Cuban talk show queen that mainstream media likes to call “the Hispanic Oprah — has been building her niche media empire since the Latino market was just that: a niche. So it seems strange that now, with such a boom in Latino marketing and an increased demand for content to support advertising, her magazine, “Cristina”, is getting the ax:

Still, experts said they were surprised by the decision, given the growth in the market.

Samir Husni, a professor of journalism at the University of Mississippi who tracks the industry, said the magazine should have been able to survive.

“We have not seen the tip of the iceberg yet,” he said. “At any given newsstand, even at the non-Hispanic areas, we have five to 10 titles in Spanish. There’s no saturation yet.”

chayanne75.jpg I agree with People magazine’s choice for “Sexiest Latin Crooner” (although the half naked Alejandro Fernandez on the November 8th cover of TV Notas was pretty caliente too). Pero if the Rican singer/dancer/actor is so hot why do I have to turn through 118 pages of other hot stars to find him?

Latino men to get an eyefull

hp2.gifFollowing in the steps of Maxim and FHM, a new wave of magazines aimed at the red-blooded Latino male are hitting newsstands:

On the cover of this fall’s Fuego, the quarterly magazine’s second issue, Colombian actress Paola Rey also stares enticingly at prospective buyers. She holds her cascading hair back with one hand and tucks the other ever so slightly in the folds of her saffron strapless swimsuit.

Only creative angles and dainty pieces of clothing separate these photos and the more explicit ones inside from the photos in these magazines’ X-rated counterparts. But this appears to be why King, aimed at African American men, and Fuego, aimed at Hispanic men, have been steadily building followers among young minority males who see them as alternatives to “lad” magazines such as Maxim, Stuff and FHM that feature mostly Caucasian women.
