5 Jun 2010We here at VL have gotten a massive influx of trolls lately, I’m not really sure why. But the way I can tell a troll is that no matter what I, la Macha, editorista, have to say, Teh Trollz are always fairly certain that I am really la Mala, i.e Head Editorista. Because all us Latinas are the same, right?
And if Teh Trollz have no problem posting twenty-five comments under different names, then us Latinas don’t either, right? (Hello Brenda, gringa, another gringa, concerned, and a fair lady!).
Needless to say, I am a different person than la Mala–and I enjoy being her head goon. I will continue to delete anybody who is not commenting about something directly connected to a particular post, and I will even laugh while I do it.
Until then, I guess I should write more posts or something.
Have a great weekend,
la macha

Before I was a blogger, I was a young activist. The transition from being “in the trenches” so to speak, to blogging hasn’t been an easy one and a large part of it is due to my status as a single mami. I needed to (and still do) be realistic as to my capacities. Pero deep down I still want to be down on the ground and in the calles. So part of my goal as a blogger has been to make connections between this online media work and what is happening on the ground. Which is why I’m very excited to be participating this weekend in the Organizing 2.0 Conference.
Is online organizing really ‘organizing’? That’s a challenging question for those of us from a labor or community organizing background. That said, online organizing has received a lot of positive attention recently in connection with the presidential elections. What does this mean for our organizations? What skills do we need to share to make the most of no-longer-new online tools for our campaigns in New York?
I’m on a panel on with some of my blogamigos. The panel is People of color/immigrant/non English online organizing (how’s that for a catch-all?). On the panel with me are Liza Sabater from Culture Kitchen/Daily Gotham and Jackie Mahendra from America’s Voice. Not on my panel pero equally una amiga in the struggle is Rachel LaBruyere from Reform Immigration for America who is heading a workshop on mobile phone activism.
The conference is relatively affordable, so if you are in the NYC area this Saturday come through, learn, support, and represent.

If you’re in the Lower East Side of NYC tonite, stop in at Bluestockings where I’ll be reading a poetic history of my life in the mami’hood as part of the Mama Storytelling Salon. Other Mama’s who will be reading tonite are Jennifer Silverman, Kerry Cohen, & Vikki Law. The reading is set to jump off at 7pm.

15 May 2009Last week my appearance on Yo Soy Latino show on 810 AM WEUS in Florida was mad short due to technical issues that can happen. Pero, host Jose Miranda was gracious enough to invite me back. That means that mañana, from 12-1 pm EST you can tune in (for non-Orlando area peeps you can listen online) and hear me discuss independent media, blogging, immigration, mami’hood, poetry and organizing and the ways all these intersect.
Jose also wanted me specifically to direct our readers’ attention to the health situation of a 14 year old Latina, Bridget Ayala Torres, who needs the community’s help.
There is a young 14 year old girl by the name of Bridget Ayala Torres, lying in Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. She is fighting for her life and she needs our help. She has been told she has less then 3 months to live. Bridget needs to find a compatible bone marrow donor out there somewhere; but more importantly, she needs help with funds to make that fight for her life. Just ask yourself how far would you go to save a loved one, your parents, your brother/sisters, or your child? This child needs us. There will be upcoming events planned for her in Orlando and in Miami stay tuned for dates and times. For more information you can also contact Bridget’s

Today is my cumpleaños. Sunday was Dia de las Madres. Two days where mujeres like me are supposed to be a little selfish and focused on the self and I have to admit, there hasn’t been much of that around here lately.
So what does a Mamita Mala want?
You could always either donate or purchase a Speak! Cd, zine & curriculum (zine and curriculum are in the final stages). Yours truly and other mamis and mujeres are on this cd speaking on our experiences through musica, poetry and prose. And you just don’t get a cd pero you will be helping single mami media makers (like me!) and their hijos get to the Allied Media Conference.
You can help other mamis, like the ever amazing Noemi. Buy some buttons or zines. If you’re part of a university, library or other organization, please purchase the Speak! cd at the institution price.
The Speak media collective can be found here.

6 May 2009I won’t be doing much posting today and it’s not because I’m nursing a Cinco de Mayo hangover.
I’m spending the day speaking to some high school students about media and identity politics.
So while I go to shape young minds, portanse bien.

Just a little shameless plug. Tonite I am going to be speaking on the Powerful Latinas interview series about the development of my political consciousness, and how my creation of my media outlets are connected with my politics.
I’m really excited and hope you can listen in!

I’m running a little slow today because I’m tired and yes, a little hungover, pero it was all worth it. Last night’s HISPANIC PANIC! reading at Nowhere,NYC hosted by Charlie Vazquez, was the most fun I have had in a long time.
I read two older poems and a new poema en tres partes called @ndo aka Twitterputeando/Fucking Statehood. Charlie Vazquez read a story about juegos/jugos de pelotas. Charles Rice-Gonzalez, Executive Director of BAAD!, read from his forthcoming novel Chulito, and Karen Jaime spit poetic love to Dominican Yols, drag kings and hope. We were quite a mix as was the audience that came through and had nothing but love.
Plus I met some wonderful new amigos, drank wine, and danced to Cuban music.
I think I’m going to try and make these readings regularly and so should you. The next one is in February, which is billed GENDER PANIC! and March (GIRL PANIC!), which will feature female erotica writers.
Just tell them Patty Peña sent you.
