Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is debunking rumors that Fidel Castro’s political career is through. After meeting with him in Havana yesterday, the president was quoted as saying that he thinks that Fidel is “ready to go back” to his normal “political role” in Cuba. Contrary to rumors that Castro is on his last legs, Lula says that Castro is “incredibly lucid” and has “impeccable health”.
The above photo from Spain’s El País shows Lula playing photographer, taking a picture of his friend Fidel.

Fidel and Hugo, Evo and Hugo. Ah yes lefty Latin America has its buddies and now Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Mexican president Felipe Calderón are trying to create a new type of Latin American male bonding, aligning their two economic powerhouse nations to work for the growth of all of Latin America. Calderon said :
President Lula and I know that our prosperity will only be complete and permanent if it comes with the prosperity of our neighbors.
This was followed by calls for a group hug. Ok not really but these two are an unlikely pair. Calderon is considered right of center and fairly Bush/U.S. friendly but Lula is considered more left and well left instantly means enemy of the U.S. in most cases.

Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva announced earlier this week that he won’t run for a third term as the leader of his country, and in what may or may not be a nod to his Venezuelan counterpart said:
“I do not play with democracy. And because I don’t play with democracy, I will not consider the hypothesis of a third term,” said the leader in the first press conference he’s given since he was re-elected in October of 2006 and the second since he assumed poswer of the governments in January of 2003.
Could be trying to tell Huguito something? Lula went on to say that if he were a legislator, he’d try to set term limits of 5 years, which is one term in Brazil.

To all who say Fidel Castro is history, recent developments in his level of activity — including walks with Garcia Marquez and long phone calls with his friend Huguito — prove otherwise. Today Castro published his second article this week in Cuba’s Granma criticizing Bush and Brazilian president Lula’s ethanol plan, apparently motivated by Lula’s visit to Camp David (read the transcript).
“At Camp David Bush declared his intention to apply this formula on a global level, which amounts to nothing less than the internalization of genocide.”

Mine: the first day of the end of Lula’s career. If there were ever a time to not be photographed hugging Dubya – in Latin America or anywhere else in the world, that time would be now.
Lula and Bush came to an agreement of cooperation between the U.S. and Brazil for the production of Ethanol, which they say will help “decrease dependency on oil”, though many believe will lead to a depletion of Brazilian crops and deforestation. Who do you believe?

New year’s resolutions are always hard to keep, even the simple ones that most people make like losing weight. Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva began his second four year term promising policies to close the growing gap between rich and poor.
“We will remove obstacles so that Brazil can grow in an accelerated way,” Silva said. “Brazil can’t continue to be prisoner held in a web of invisible steel, debating and agitating, without seeing the fabric that holds it back.”
The irony? Lula arrived at his swearing in ceremony in a Rolls Royce.
