23 Jun 2008Everyone’s favorite anti-immigrant spokesperson, CNN’s Lou Dobbs, has suggested that he may be interested in running for governor of the state of New Jersey. In response to this scary possibility, America’s Voice has created a website for the maybe candidate based on his racist views. From a press release on the launching of the site:
The site features our take on what a Lou Dobbs campaign platform would look like, inspired by the unrealistic and polarizing views of real Congressional candidates. Visitors are invited to submit their ideas (in English Only) for the Dobbs campaign slogan contest. The winner will receive a free t-shirt featuring their slogan, and activists around the country will have the opportunity to purchase the shirt online.Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice had this to say:
“America’s Voice is glad to take this opportunity to reveal the truth about anti-immigrant, mass-deportation candidates who have stood in the way of real immigration solutions for years.
Lou Dobbs is not a real candidate, he’s a caricature of what is wrong with the current immigration debate. He offers no real solutions to our broken immigration system, and simply uses his program to spread proven lies, stir up racial tensions and fear, and provide a platform to known hate groups.
The site is funny as all hell. Check it out.

22 May 2008Turn on CNN, Fox News, and any other number of cable news networks and you’re likely to see and hear a skewed vision of the state of immigration in the U.S. and it’s impact. No surprise here. Media Matters Action Network just released a study, Fear and Loathing in Prime Time Immigration Myths and Cable News, that puts some numbers together to show just how warped this vision is. For example, our pal Lou Dobbs has dedicated 70% of his shows to the issue of “illegal immigration”. Dobbs, Bill O’Reilly, and Glenn Beck specifically have made careers on making the myths surrounding “scary brown people without papers” part of the media and general consciousness.
During 2007, the alleged connection between illegal immigration and crime was discussed on 94 episodes of Lou Dobbs Tonight, 66 episodes of The O’Reilly Factor, and 29 episodes of Glenn Beck.During 2007, the allegation that undocumented immigrants drain social services and/or don’t pay taxes was discussed on 71 episodes of Lou Dobbs Tonight, 13 episodes of Glenn Beck, and eight episodes of The O’Reilly Factor.
Dobbs and Beck have perpetuated two related myths, that there are plans to construct a “NAFTA Superhighway” running from Mexico to Canada, and that there are plans to join Mexico, Canada, and the United States in a “North American Union” similar to the European Union. Dobbs has discussed the fictional North American Union on 56 separate programs during the past two years. (These two myths were also given a boost by Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, who pushed the ideas on the campaign trail.)
All three programs have presented as fact the “reconquista” myth, which states that there is a movement afoot for Mexico to take over the American Southwest.
Lou Dobbs Tonight has also been the show on which viewers are told about a mythical explosion of leprosy cases due to illegal immigration, and a mythical epidemic of voter fraud due to illegal immigration.
The report does an excellent job at countering the myths with facts and stats, just like the right wing fear mongers do.
It’s really worth reading.
Check out the report here.
Check out a video to go with the report after the jump.

While promoting his new book on ABC’s The View, Geraldo Rivera said he wouldn’t shake hands with Lou Dobbs and other media hate mongers. He has no problem with the term illegal immigrant though. I just love how Barbara Walter’s makes Geraldo an expert because he’s “of immigrant background”.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Earlier this week Americans for Legal Immigration PAC began a campaign to convince the CNN anchor Lou Dobbs to enter the presidential race if a so-called “pro-amnesty” candidate wins the Republican presidential nomination. Who are the pro-amnesty Republicans? According to ALIPAC, John McCain, Mike Huckabee, and Rudy Giuliani.
After visiting the organizations website, I don’t know if they are scarier or if Lou Dobbs is.

Wannabe Latino Lou Dobbs is considering a run for president. Seriously. There are lots of conditions for the run to become official, like if billionaire NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg first enters the race as a third-party candidate. Oh yeah and over my dead body. Like this man needs another platform to spew his hate from?

Some creative activists in Milwaukee planned to descend upon the Milwaukee Courthouse and Immigration Office today donning masks of Lou Dobbs. Members of the grassroots immigration group Voces de la Frontera are asking if it takes being Lou Dobbs to have a voice in the immigration debate. The event is part of a larger 10-city tour across Wisconsin to spark lively debate on immigration reform.
Right on!!! Someone is Wisconsin needs to send us pictures!!

I didn’t know what category to file this post under, as we don’t have one for “idiocy” (though we should), so I just filed it under “controversy”, which if this case isn’t, it should be. From ThinkProgress:
An article in the Spanish-language newspaper El Diario La Prensa today notes that the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) has accepted CNN host Lou Dobbs as a national lifetime member. A lifetime membership costs $1,000; Dobbs donated $5,000. NAHJ president Rafael Olmeda tried to justify Dobbs’s membership:“We cannot pretend that illegal immigration is not part of the story. Lou Dobbs, in my opinion, tells this story in an incomplete, not constructive, way. But he has the right to disagree with me,” reaffirmed Olmeda in writing after a 36-minute conversation on Friday afternoon. (trans.)

Lou Dobbs, the CNN “journalist” whose favorite pastime is scapegoating Mexican immigrants for every problem this country has, has just been promoted by the cable news network. CNN had axed old timer Aaron Brown to make room for their new faves, Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blitzer, and it seems now that Dobbs has been bumped up to star level as well, giving him a seat as anchor for the midterm elections right next to those guys:
Dobbs’ weeknight news show will expand to seven days a week, with the two weekend editions presenting highlights of the week’s reporting beginning Oct. 28.The longest-running anchor on CNN’s air, Dobbs is suddenly hot again, due to his new opinionated persona as a crusader on issues like immigration reform. His hourlong “Lou Dobbs Tonight” is up 22 percent in viewers this year over last, a bigger increase than any show on CNN or Fox News Channel.
According to CNN, Dobbs won’t be on hand to interview analysts (like normal journalists do) but strictly to provide his opinion on things. Get ready to hear the words “broken borders” and “the outsourcing of America” numerous times.
Anyone remember when journalists were discouraged from offering their own opinions on the news — when they at least pretended to be objective — and when they did offer opinions it was made clear that that was the case with the word “OPINION” written in big letters across the screen?
That’s not the case anymore, since spitting hate is now better for your career than proper reporting.

Latino satirists Lalo Alcaraz and Esteban Zul are at it again, announcing on their Los Angeles based radio show, the Pocho Hour of Power, the name your baby Lou Dobbs contest.
The first undocumented immigrant to name their U.S. born child “Lou Dobbs,” before September 16th , 2006, will win $500.00 worth of baby nursery items from participating East Los Angeles merchants supporting the Name Your Baby Lou Dobbs Challenge.
Some people of course are missing the point, like the right-wing online World Net Daily who stated:
Though the contest was announced April 26, there have been no illegal aliens who have tried to claim the prize.
