Seems like racist white people in the media are getting alot of attention this week from various organizations and websites and some of that negative attention is well deserved. But negative, reactive pressure against some of these crazy gringos is only as effective as the values and goals behind them.

I already told you about the Basta Dobbs campaign. America’s Voice launched their own campaign aimed against Lou Dobbs. They are seeking donations to help buy ad space countering Lou Dobbs and his hate speech. (full disclosure: they have purchased ad space on VL).

Every weeknight, CNN airs one full hour of Hate TV — it’s called, “Lou Dobb’s Tonight.”

Dobbs upset about calls for his job

DobbsWebPicRoberto Lovato has got a good post up over at Huffington Post about how the campaign against Lou Dobbs is going:

Faced with a growing movement of communities demanding that CNN drop his program, Lou Dobbs responded Friday with one of his favorite postures: the victimized defender of American virtue. “They ask CNN to fire me because I oppose illegal immigration” said Dobbs, who added, “”The last thing they want is a first amendment, where people can express themselves… These are the most un-American, frightened people in the world because they won’t compete in the marketplace of ideas and facts.”

I think it’s a good sign that Lou felt that he needed to respond to the campaign. Keep passing the word, linking and signing–and who knows, after years of disgusting tirades, Lou Dobbs may actually be held accountable for his actions!

NCLR JOINS CAMPAIGN AIMED AT CNN’S LOU DOBBS TONIGHT ADVERTISERS

Washington, DC—In the wake of a scheduled appearance by CNN personality Lou Dobbs at a rally hosted by an anti-immigrant hate group, NCLR (National Council of La Raza), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States, today joined a coalition www.DropDobbs.com of organizations including Media Matters for America, Center for Community Change, Center for New Community, Dolores Huerta Foundation, The Hispanic Institute, League of United Latin American Citizens, National Hispanic Media Coalition, National Puerto Rican Coalition, NDN, Southern Poverty Law Center and America’s Voice in calling on U.S. corporations to drop their advertising from his show until he and CNN disassociates themselves from the group.

Dobbs will lead a group of broadcasters at a rally in Washington targeting Congress called “Hold Their Feet to the Fire,” hosted by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), a group that has been designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as a hate group. As extensively documented in recent years, the Southern Poverty Law Center states that:

* FAIR was founded by John Tanton, who also operates a racist publishing company and has compared immigrants to “bacteria.”
* FAIR has employed members of white supremacist groups in key positions.
* FAIR has promoted racist conspiracy theories.
* FAIR has accepted more than $1 million from the Pioneer Fund, a racist foundation devoted to eugenics and to proving a connection between race and IQ.
* FAIR president Dan Stein once suggested that Asians and Hispanics were engaged in “competitive breeding.”

“While Lou Dobbs, as a private citizen, has every right to speak at whatever event he pleases,” said NCLR President and CEO Janet Murguía in a letter to CNN CEO Jim Walton, “as a representative of CNN’s ‘best political news team in America,’ his appearance provides FAIR with the legitimacy of the CNN brand and signals an intensification of the lopsided coverage Dobbs’ show has provided during the debate over immigration reform.”

Murguía said that CNN’s brand would be tainted until they disassociate from the hate group and cautioned advertisers that their brands would be tarnished as well. “We know that advertisers may be unaware that FAIR has been designated as a hate group,” said Murguía. “We look at this as a teachable moment.” Murguía said that the coalition is compiling lists of advertisers and is currently reaching out to those companies in advance of going public with their names.

“Words have consequences and lives are at stake,” said Murguía. “The Latino community knows all too well the effect extreme and polarizing rhetoric can have. Over the past five years we have expressed concern over the vitriolic rhetoric that surrounds the immigration debate. During that time, we have seen a double digit increase in the number of hate crimes against Latinos and substantial growth in the number of hate groups targeting Latinos.”

Murguía indicated that she and CNN have tried to work behind the scenes to bring balance to CNN coverage on a number of levels, including diversity before and behind the camera and parity in what she called “the relentless bias” of CNN programming on immigration due to Dobbs’ show.

Murguía said that she has documented for CNN a litany of issues over the past two years, including Dobbs’ regular retinue of guests representing hate groups, vigilantes, and nativists touted as “immigration experts”; his relentless repetition of stories on immigrants and crime that project an impression far from reality; and his association of immigrants as carriers of disease that has been both inaccurate and pejorative.

Murguía said she had hoped that by working with CNN directly, the news organization’s approach could come into balance. “The appearance by Dobbs at a hate group rally is the last straw,” she said. “It should be of deep concern to CNN and every one of its advertisers. The credibility of their brands is at stake.”

Unless you’ve had your head in the sand for the past couple of days, you’ve heard about the controversy that’s been swirling around our good friend Hispanic journalist Lou Dobbs. It seems after all these years of hate and bigotry, and after years of activist groups like Media Matters going after Dobbs for racist rhetoric, it’s only caught on now that Lou appears to be bought into the whole “birther” movement. Media Matters made the following PSA to warn weaker minds of Dobbs’ agenda:

Tons of mail to CNN demanding Dobbs get pulled from the lineup and suddenly they are nervous…amazing! Hadn’t CNN president John Klein said Dobb’s claims were “legitimate”? It appears he’s since taken that back; in fact, he never believed it, as in a private memo, Klein urged Dobbs to drop the whole thing two weeks ago.

Last night I was honored to speak with a class at the College of Mount St. Vincent on an alternative vision of media and left asking the students to make at least one piece of independent media part of their daily intake, since on a constant level they (and all of us) are fed messages from the corporate media.

Pero sometimes the message being sent is just so out there, such a sad attempt to maintain legitimacy in a changing world, that you have to ask. Why are you still here? That’s the question for CNN’s Lou Dobbs.

His scapegoating of immigrants (racialized as Latinos, especially Mexicans) has turned into a tired old sideshow act or worse, he’s that viejo uncle at everyone’s holiday dinner/family reunion. You know, he’s the one that everyone wonders who the hell invited him again about as they grit their teeth and listen to his ranting. His newest skipped record rant is the “birther” issue, that is that President Obama’s birth certificate isn’t legit and that he’s an…..”illegal”.

Ok that was actually a little scary.

This comic is making the rounds:

wryhumor

Yay for anything that rips on Evil Death Monster Lou Dobbs.

From Buzz Flash we get the news that apparently somebody thought it was a good, funny, ironic idea to put a racist picture of Barack Obama on the front of a box of pancake mix and sell that mix to other racists like Lou Dobbs.

A description of the box:

While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama’s politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.

LouDobbsjpgEveryone’s favorite anti-immigrant spokesperson, CNN’s Lou Dobbs, has suggested that he may be interested in running for governor of the state of New Jersey. In response to this scary possibility, America’s Voice has created a website for the maybe candidate based on his racist views. From a press release on the launching of the site:

The site features our take on what a Lou Dobbs campaign platform would look like, inspired by the unrealistic and polarizing views of real Congressional candidates. Visitors are invited to submit their ideas (in English Only) for the Dobbs campaign slogan contest. The winner will receive a free t-shirt featuring their slogan, and activists around the country will have the opportunity to purchase the shirt online.

Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice had this to say:

“America’s Voice is glad to take this opportunity to reveal the truth about anti-immigrant, mass-deportation candidates who have stood in the way of real immigration solutions for years.

Lou Dobbs is not a real candidate, he’s a caricature of what is wrong with the current immigration debate. He offers no real solutions to our broken immigration system, and simply uses his program to spread proven lies, stir up racial tensions and fear, and provide a platform to known hate groups.

The site is funny as all hell. Check it out.

New Report on How Cable Media Skews Immigration Issue

12:00 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration| Media| Politics| TV| race · Comments Off

22 May 2008

LouDobbsjpgTurn on CNN, Fox News, and any other number of cable news networks and you’re likely to see and hear a skewed vision of the state of immigration in the U.S. and it’s impact. No surprise here. Media Matters Action Network just released a study, Fear and Loathing in Prime Time Immigration Myths and Cable News, that puts some numbers together to show just how warped this vision is. For example, our pal Lou Dobbs has dedicated 70% of his shows to the issue of “illegal immigration”. Dobbs, Bill O’Reilly, and Glenn Beck specifically have made careers on making the myths surrounding “scary brown people without papers” part of the media and general consciousness.

During 2007, the alleged connection between illegal immigration and crime was discussed on 94 episodes of Lou Dobbs Tonight, 66 episodes of The O’Reilly Factor, and 29 episodes of Glenn Beck.

During 2007, the allegation that undocumented immigrants drain social services and/or don’t pay taxes was discussed on 71 episodes of Lou Dobbs Tonight, 13 episodes of Glenn Beck, and eight episodes of The O’Reilly Factor.

Dobbs and Beck have perpetuated two related myths, that there are plans to construct a “NAFTA Superhighway” running from Mexico to Canada, and that there are plans to join Mexico, Canada, and the United States in a “North American Union” similar to the European Union. Dobbs has discussed the fictional North American Union on 56 separate programs during the past two years. (These two myths were also given a boost by Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, who pushed the ideas on the campaign trail.)

All three programs have presented as fact the “reconquista” myth, which states that there is a movement afoot for Mexico to take over the American Southwest.

Lou Dobbs Tonight has also been the show on which viewers are told about a mythical explosion of leprosy cases due to illegal immigration, and a mythical epidemic of voter fraud due to illegal immigration.

The report does an excellent job at countering the myths with facts and stats, just like the right wing fear mongers do.

It’s really worth reading.

Check out the report here.

Check out a video to go with the report after the jump.
