17 Nov 2009Because everyone else is doing it.
Correction, because everyone else doing it and I want to do it too but a little differently.
Because VivirLatino was reached out by various organizations spearheading the Basta Dobbs and Drop Dobbs campaign to endorse the added pressure on CNN, its advertisers, and Lou Dobbs.
Because Lou Dobbs is no longer on CNN.
Because we’re pretty damn sure that while one platform has closed for Dobbs, the number of hate comments/mail that VivirLatino has received for our coverage of Dobbs and our support for his leaving CNN proves that there is still a public who accepts his distortion of reality when it comes to undocumented immigrants and Latinos as factual news. Dobbs still has daily radio show
broadcast by more than 160 stations as part of the United Stations Radio Networks Inc. He has his lifetime membership to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, which put out their own statement welcoming Dobbs’ leaving the news network. Some of the latest political bochinche has Dobbs possibly running for Senate in New Jersey (information gleaned from the NY Post which we will not link to). We should also add that reports have Dobbs leaving CNN with $8 million in severance pay.
Don’t get us wrong. Struggles and movements need victories and this is one and we should celebrate it pero not for too long. Dobbs is already doing the show circuit and he will continue to spew his racist nonsense. The real problem is that his nonsense talks comes at a time when the U.S. Government makes statement after statement about the need for immigration reform, while separating families first and writing legislation later. Pero that’s a whole different post or a dozen.

11 Nov 2009Mad props to the peeps at Basta Dobbs! and Drop Dobbs and the hundreds of thousands who supported the efforts cuz it looks like little Louie is packing up his toys and going home.
Lou Dobbs, the longtime CNN anchor whose anti-immigration views made him a TV lightning rod, plans to announce Wednesday that he is leaving the network, two network employees said.
A CNN executive confirmed that Mr. Dobbs will announce his resignation plans on his 7 p.m. program. His resignation is effective immediately; tonight’s program will be his last on CNN. His contract was not set to expire until the end of 2011.
Mr. Dobbs informed his staff members of his intentions in a meeting Wednesday afternoon. He did not immediately respond to a telephone call seeking comment.
Its not clear if he was forced to resign as a result of all the negative attention he was bringing CNN or if he left on his own.
Damn I wish I had CNN just for tonite.

2 Nov 2009Last week I wrote about how Lou Dobbs’ twisted obsession with framing reality to fit his hateful agenda has been stepped up. Turns out that Dobbs’ characterization of the “attack” on his home was ::gasp:: not entirely accurate. I mean, hell even the NY Post, who usually is an apologist for racist behavior and attitudes even wrote it up. Our Unapologetic Mexican friend, Nezua, breaks it down.

30 Oct 2009Let’s clear a few things up shall we? Last time I checked there wasn’t a campaign supported by mainstream media distortions and government policies that encourage profiling that puts the lives of white male television pundits. There are no hoardes of Latinos going white pundit hunting. Pero Lou Dobbs, who yes is the target of multiple campaigns to get his hate speech off the airwaves, or at the very least off CNN, now is claiming that he and his wife were the targets in a shooting and who is to blame? Latinos of course.
And as if Dobbs’ claims aren’t ridiculous enough, Maricopa country Sheriff Joe Arpaio wants to jump on the “protect me from the scary Latinos” bandwagon too.
Stay tuned because there will be more to come as it seems that Dobbs and his friends want to make Latinos out to be the scariest thing out there this Halloween.

29 Oct 2009When America’s Voice raised enough cash to buy a spot for their Drop Dobbs ad in a Latino in America time slot, CNN felt that their loyalty to hateful Dobbs was worth more so they passed.
Knowing an opportunity when they see one, the Drop Dobbs ad will play tonight on MSNBC during the Rachel Maddow show at 9:00 pm EST. America’s Voice was able to purchase air time on local cable networks in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and Washington, DC. So tune in and even if you can’t tune in because the ad isn’t running in your ‘hood (or if you don’t have cable like me), let the CNN head know that one thing you aren’t watching is his network, especially as long as Lou Dobbs is on.

22 Oct 2009
After a successful day of events across the country yesterday that coincided with the airing of Latino in America, seems like CNN’s Lou Dobbs realizes that it’s gonna take more than calling Latinos who call him out “fleas” to get rid of us. The producers of Lou Dobbs’ show emailed Roberto Lovato of BastaDobbs to be on the show. Roberto, never one to shy away from a good opportunity, said claro pero on one condition…

22 Oct 2009Last night CNN’s special, Latino in America aired. Not being able to afford cable (the blogger life is so glamorous), is only one reason. CNN refuses to accept any responsibility for who it puts on the air and thinks it can give us tired old stereotypes and tired old white men.
I understand, it’s easy to get excited and caught up in the hype. They are talking about us! Latinos! In America! The same way Dobbs talks about us, Latinos, in America everyday. The same way they attack us, Latinos, in America everyday.
I’m too busy living Latina in the Americas to watch a projection of what I’m supposed to do or be.
Those who did watch it…thoughts?

16 Oct 2009The plan was to pay the $16,000 it cost to place the ad during CNN’s Latino in America Series next week. Claro the show will be surrounded by Spanglish ads urging you to buy from Walmart with it’s horrible treatment of workers and eat McDonald’s with it’s horrible treatment of animals and your body. But air an ad that has something to say and is trying to sell a message of truth? Not CNN. They rejected America’s Voice money and ad.
I don’t have cable so I don’t watch CNN and I had no intention of watching the series, Latino in America. Given the criticisms I heard and read about the CNN series Black in America, I already had made up my mind that the show likely wouldn’t represent with any accuracy what the Latino experience was for me, my familia, my friends, and vecinos. The hypocrisy of a network that poses itself as a fair and balanced news leader, airing a series on Latinidad while paying the salary of a the hateful Dobbs, whose rhetoric gives both the government and individuals justification for hate crimes against Latinos, especially Latino immigrants, grows. As Nezua wrote, CNN doesn’t really care about what it really means to be Latino in America. Maybe it’s time not just to drop Dobbs but to drop CNN.

23 Sep 2009Call me jaded, call me having been watching this Latino political/media game too long, pero there is little that surprises me or makes me gasp especially when it comes to hypocrisy that knows no party boundaries.
First up is Joe ” you lie” Wilson, who after flipping out in Congress over the undocumented getting health care, which thanks to Obama and amigos won’t happen ::sigh of relief::, it was revealed that Wilson helped an undocumented immigrant stay in the U.S.
A second allegedly gasp inducing moment came when Newt Gingrich launched a website for Latinos err Hispanics. The site, called The Americano is a bilingual website run by Sylvia Garcia, his director of Hispanic outreach and the goal is, to lure Latinos to the GOP and to cash in on Latino Hispanic Heritage Month. I will restate the obvious. Yes, it’s a hypocritical move. You’ll remember that in 2007 Newt said that Spanish was the language of living in the ghetto and now he launched a site that has Spanish. Newt then apologized and now he has seen the light and is using Spanglish, the real language of the ghetto according to some of my detractors. I mean The Americano? Shouldn’t it be el Americano or the American? Pick a language carajo! Some peeps are all caught up on the title, The Americano which translates to the “American”. I guess my question is when Newt speaks of “Americanos” is he using it to mean just people from the U.S. or Latin Americans across the Americas? Maybe Obama can offer some clarification?
