andres-manuel-lopez-obrador-1.jpgAs we’ve seen over the past several months, leftist ex-candidate for the Mexican presidency Andrés Manuel López Obrador doesn’t take defeat (or in the opinion of some, a stolen election) well. More evidence that AMLO isn’t even close to giving up and is serious about his “legitimate government” is his new project — television.

According to 20 Minutos, AMLO’s show will be on Mexican television network TV Azteca weekly and will be directed by Mexican filmmaker Luis Mandoki.

“The objective is that it be known everywhere what we are doing and [on the show] we are going to tell it like it is. There we’ll also talk about this usurper government and of the dummy president,” said the head of the leftist party.

Clearly not taking cues from Al Gore, AMLO’s presidential campaign site has recently become his “legitimate government” website, in which he outlines detailed plans — including budgets — for the way publics funds are to be spent over the coming year. As crushed as I was to see AMLO defeated, I just don’t get this, and I mean that quite literally: how can he implement this when he’s not in power? And since I don’t live in Mexico anymore I can’t know what this looks like from there, but from here is seems like he’s going a bit batty. Am I missing something?

López Obrador to Univisión: I am the President

obrador2.jpgAccording to Spain’s El País newspaper, left-wing candidate for the presidency of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador told Univisión yesterday that he is in fact the President of his country, though election fraud has placed that honor on his opponent Felipe Calderón:

Leftist Andrés Manuel López Obrador told U.S. network Univision today that he is “President of Mexico”, as the Electoral court continues to examine the charges of voter fraud during the July 2nd elections. López Obrador, according to the Mexican Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) took second place by receiving 0.58% votes less than conservative candidate Felipe Calderón.

According to El País, this declaration seems to have been brought on by the fact that

“…powerful teacher’s union leader and close friend to President
Vicente Fox, Elba Esther Gordillo, referred to Calderón as ‘President Elect’ in an official speech.”

President or not, López Obrador is still not giving up, and to prove that point, he’s organized yet another “Vote by Vote” march for this weekend, which will end at Mexico City’s main square, el Zócalo.

mexicanvoting.jpgI was certain that when I woke up this morning the Mexican presidential election would have finally been decided, and depending on what media outlets you read, it has been! Confused? So are we. Sources such as The New York Times and Reuters are reporting ALMO’s lead over Calderón as Jennifer reported yesterday. CNN is reporting the opposite, stating that early this morning Felipe Calderón has taken the lead over Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Univision has gone so far as to declare Calderón the winner.

Lopez Obrador is no Al Gore

obrador.jpgWith the final results of the Mexican presidential election expected as early as tomorrow or as late as the weekend, depending on which news source you read, the leftist Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) and their candidate, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, are prepping for the worse by not backing down. As votes continue to be counted and as the gap between Lopez Obrador and Felipe Calderon lessens (with Calderon leading according to sources), an article posted today on AlterNet states:

Lopez Obrador has said he will honor the results of a fair election, even if he loses by one vote. But if history is any lesson, Lopez Obrador is no Al Gore. He won’t walk away from a stolen election without a protest. His political rise has been characterized by having to respond to dirty tricks. And if anyone is justified in being a “firebrand” about stolen elections, it is Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
