Miss California might have joined “the storm” against gay marriage, but in New Hampshire it appears that there isn’t a drop of rain. Fresh on the heels of Iowa, the New Hampshire State Senate passed a bill on Wednesday making gay marriage legal:
Even though the marriage equality bill had been rejected by a key legislative committee, Ray Buckley, the out gay chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, spent the day April 28 “whipping” support for both that measure and a transgender rights bill. NowHampshire.com reported that Buckley was pulling out all the stops, meeting with the Senate Democratic leadership in what proved to be a successful effort to bring the marriage bill over the top in the April 29 vote. The House of Representatives passed the marriage measure in March. Some opponents of the transgender rights bill have derided it as a “bathroom bill.”
The historic move makes New Hampshire the fifth state to let gays and lesbians marry. Wow, we’ve now got New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts and even Iowa, and my beloved California can’t get it together. Pretty sad.
The bill still needs to be signed into law by NH Governor John Lynch, a Democrat, who has expressed in the past that he believed that the word “marriage” be limited to unions between partners of the opposite sex.
UPDATE:
But wait, that’s not all. Maine passed a similar bill late this afternoon! This one also needs to get past the governor, but that’s two states in one week!

29 Apr 2009In 1998, Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard was brutally murdered for being gay, drawing attention to the problem of hate crimes against LGBT people in this country and becoming a catalyst for much needed hate crime legislation. Since then, the Shepard case has been a cultural reference point both in the good and the bad sense; hate mongers like Fred Phelps have used Shepard as the target of their disgusting campaigns, and the general public has become more aware of hate crimes as a result of this much-publicized crime.
We all know this brutal murder was a hate crime. But one Republican Congresswoman, Rep. Virginia Foxx of North Carolina, wants you think otherwise. Check out her speech on the subject in the video above.
Might this be a good example of the reasons why Senator Arlen Specter believes his party has moved too far to the right?
Angry? Give Rep. Foxx a call and tell her so: DC office Phone: (202) 225-2071 NC District office: Toll Free: 1(866) 677-8968 Phone: (828) 265-0240

27 Apr 2009It was surprising when it happened in California — but in Iowa? Yes, it isn’t science fiction: starting today, gay couples can legally marry in the state of Iowa — says the State Supreme Court, unanimously — and they’ve already started applying for their licenses. The Des Moines Register reports:
Cathy Johnson of Lineville stood at the courthouse door and collected petitions with at least 190 signatures. The petitioners asked Recorder Angela Horton not to issue licenses to same-sex couples. They also called for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.County recorders across Iowa received similar petitions. Dozens of licenses were issued in the state’s most populated counties. A handful of ceremonies were held when judges waived the standard three-day waiting period.
Throughout Iowa, county recorders were receiving similar petitions. Also, in the state’s most populated counties, recorders were busy issuing marriage licenses. In rural counties, however, few if any licenses were issued.
As you might have guessed, Iowa conservatives aren’t happy that marriage equality has come to their state. It is being reported that opponents have collected 3000 signatures with the intent of getting the ruling reversed. Check out what some of them think in the video above, and some “man on the street” opinions that might surprise you after the jump.

22 Apr 2009The trial of transgender murder victim Angie Zapata goes to the jury today in Colorado, and marks the first time the state will try a case in which gender identity — recognized as a protected class by Colorado and 11 other states — gets hate crime status.
The killer, one Allen Andrade, claims he lost control upon learning Angie’s gender but prosecutors say the killing — by blunt force trauma with a fire extinguisher — was premeditated:
But prosecutor Brandi Nieto argued that Andrade learned the truth about Zapata’s gender 36 hours before he killed her. Andrade had accompanied Zapata to traffic court, where clerks called her Justin Zapata, Nieto said.“This was not a snap decision,” she said.
Last month, a judge threw out Andrade’s confession to police, saying it came after the suspect told them he was through answering questions. Prosecutors say they intend to use statements he made to others, including, “It’s not like I . . . killed a straight, law-abiding citizen.”
Wow, what a heartless individual.
The L.A. Times reports that controversy has erupted in the courtroom as the defense attorney insisted on referring to Angie as “Justin” or “he”, while the prosecution referred to her as “she”.
The video above shows coverage of the trial from earlier this week. The question that remains is what Andrade will be charged with. Since his defense concedes he is guilty, it’s now up to jurors to decide whether he will be charged with 1st degree murder — which will mean life in prison without parole — or a lesser charge.

Immigration is rarely talked about within the context of queerness. But people who are queer have a much harder time in a corrupt screwed up system than others do–and the reason why is because of the Catch-22 of “family sponsorship.” Take this case of lesbian couple Jay Mercado and Shirley Tan.
Tan applied for political asylum in 1995, and thought her case was still pending, until immigration officials knocked on her door this past January. She said her former lawyer never told her a deportation order was issued in 2002. Her bid for asylum failed because the threat to her life in the Philippines came from a relative — who shot her in the head when she was young over an inheritance battle — instead of from the government.
So after living here in the U.S. for 23 years, having family, forming a new life–Tan was scheduled to be deported to a country where she had suffered extreme violence. She can not get sponsored by her partner, who is a U.S. citizen–because her partner is a woman.

Not to be all Obama administration “rah, rah, sis, boom ba!” but after quietly celebrating the latest reversal to the Bush farm worker rule, I’m celebrating this piece of unofficial news as well:
The Obama administration will support a United Nations declaration affirming that sexual orientation and gender identity are included in international human rights protections, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday evening.
According to officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because Congress was still being notified, the Obama administration had reviewed the reasons why the Bush administration opposed the declaration, and decided to notify the French sponsors that the United States would support it.
As you might already know, the U.S. was, thanks to the prior administration, part of a shameful list of oppressive, anti-gay countries such as Saudi Arabia, Uganda, Egypt and the Vatican City. It’s impossible for people in Europe and other places that signed the agreement to understand this kind of hatred. Luckily, with this move, we are a millimeter closer to a more dignified world image.
There’s still a lot left for the Obama administration to do when it comes to gay rights. Namely: approve gay marriage.

A-Rod might be yesterday’s news for Madonna (who is allegedly now living with her Latin lover Brasileiro Jesus Luz), but Madge’s ex-lover doesn’t look like he’s sulking. In the photo above, A-Rod loses all inhibitions to appeal to Details magazine’s main demographic: gay guys.
But wait, who’s that hot guy A-Rod is getting all kissy with? Oh, it’s…his own reflection! WTF?
I like the photography, and you gotta hand it to A-Rod for being bold enough to do a shoot like this. Baseball is a man’s game and it takes some guts to shake off all that machismo. Way to go, A-Rod!

If you are in the Chicago area, I strongly recommend making it out to this event or otherwise showing support for it!
“Amor sin fronteras” or “Love Without Borders” is this year’s theme for the only prom for and by LGBT youth in the Chicago area. Queer Prom 2009 will take place on May 29th at the National Museum of Mexican Art.
“We want to provide a feeling of community, an event that identifies the Latin@ community, the gay community and Pilsen as a neighborhood…I think a lot times a young gay person, especially in schools in La Villita [a predominantly Mexican neighborhood] feel isolated from the gay community. The only thing they know is Boystown [a predominantly gay white male neighborhood in Chicago], clubs and the commercial aspects of being gay. We mean to connect them to another aspect of the community, ” said Tania Unzueta, Coordinator of Queer Prom 2009.
…
Queer Prom is more than just a party. The coordinators and attendees feel that they are uniting to celebrate their common experiences, “How beautiful to gay! How beautiful to be Latin@!,” Unzueta finalizes. For more information about Queer Prom 2009 visit www.wrte.org/homofrecuencia or call 312-455-9455 x203.

“When all else fails, pray!” is what comes to mind upon reading about the multiple candlelight vigils that were held throughout my state on the eve of the hearing that will make or break California’s most discriminatory law against LGBT citizens. Last night San Franciscans, like Californians in other cities big and small, held vigils and marched. What else can you do at this point? The San Francisco Chronicle reports:
The crowd, bundled against the chill, carried signs reading, “We All Deserve the Freedom To Marry,” and “Down with Prop. 8!” as they marched along Market Street. The peaceful protest stretched for two city blocks past stopped Muni street cars while police held back traffic at the intersections. The group made their way to City Hall, where a pianist and singer entertained the crowd with love songs. Some of the participants planned to camp out in the Civic Center Plaza to be there for the hearing.
It will be shown on a JumboTron for those who don’t have access to viewing rooms set up in the San Francisco Public Library.
Will the great State of California overturn what has been called “the will of the people”? Or will it let thousands of gay families remain together? I am pessimistic, but we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is reportedly all booked up…the media is just clamoring to get his take. Check out an interview with Mayor Newsom and hear his thoughts after the jump.
