Last week, legendary documentarian Ken Burns angered many in the Latino community when it was revealed that his upcoming (and much hyped) PBS documentary about World War II completely ignored the contribution of Latinos on the U.S. side of the conflict.
Several Latino leaders and military veterans, angry that Burns’ high-profile documentary series “The War” includes no conversations with Latinos who fought, are demanding changes. PBS and Burns want to satisfy an important constituency, without the precedent of a filmmaker forced to change his vision due to a protest.
According to AP, the omissions in the yet-to-be-released doc were revealed by one
Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez, a former newspaper reporter who runs an oral history project about Latino World War II veterans at the University of Texas.

Surprise, surprise (well, ok not really) but it seems like the U.S. Military targets young, poor communities of color to reach their recruitment quotas. In a report released by the American Friends Service Committee, a pacifist organization, in New York City the military recruited from the predominantly African-American and Latino neighborhoods of the South Bronx, Washington Heights, Inwood, central and north Brooklyn, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Flushing and Jamaica. In 2004 99 people from Washington Heights and Inwood joined the military. In Jackson Heights, Corona, Woodside, and Elmhurst, 119 people enlisted. Compare this to the 7 individuals who enlisted from the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

I’ve written about how the U.S. Military is targeting young Latinos to join their shrinking rank and file. Well today young people in el Barrio, NYC aka Spanish Harlem are taking a step to resist and tell the military recruiters that music and Hummers are not worth their lives. Today at noon there will be a rally at 103d St. between Lexington & Park Avenues. According to a press release by the organizers of the rally:
The Pentagon’s personnel records reveal that in East Harlem in 2004, over 90% of the enlistees into the u.s. military (not including the marines who did not provide sufficient data) were Latino and the percentage of recruits from East Harlem was 15 times higher than that of the wealthy (and largely white) Upper East Side which is located right below East Harlem in Manhattan. In the South Bronx, which has the largest population of Puerto Ricans in New York City, the number of recruits into the u.s. military last year was 38 times higher than that of the Upper East Side.

Last year VL told readers about how the U.S. Air Force was trying to attract Latino young people using Spanish language rock. Well the military is at it again. According to an article in the New York Times:
The Army also parades rigged-out, juiced-up Hummers wherever youths gather as promotional tools.
The army has ads that have been on heavy rotation on both Univision and Telemundo television and radio networks and have full color spreads in magazines read by Latino youth.
