John McCain Targets Cuban Exile Vote

3:27 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|US Presidential Race 2008 · Comments Off

Seeing that he’s trailing in Latino votes compared to Barack Obama, John McCain is going after the Cuban exile vote by bringing up the big bad wolves of Castro and the fact that Obama has said that he would consider meeting with whatever Castro happens to be in power.

Wouldn’t be interesting if John McCain made an ad aimed at an issue that all Latinos cared about, like um education or the economy maybe? Is this the best way to target the Latino vote?

Barack Obama is going after California Latino voters through mini online Spanish language novelas. Using You Tube and the website, Tu Voz, Tu Voto, the little films are just as poorly acted out as real life novelas. They also rely on the same zero sum stereotypes about what choices Latinos have. The Ortiz family (no relation) here basically is telling other Latinos to choose between voting and marching, instead of highlighting how both are weapons.

I have to see the rest of the episodes but as a Latina, I’m a little offended at being told their is one path and one path only towards change and action.

See the rest of the videos yourself at Vote Hope.

Democraticforum%20002.jpgBetween last night’s debate and an early flight out of DC, I’m exhausted but thrilled to have gone and given the opportunity, not just to cover the event, but meet some other bloggers whom I admire.

That said. I sleepily searched through the Spanish language media for some report on the debate last night and found nada. Did I take a nap or was this ignored in the Latino press? Maybe the press was too preoccupied with the immigration issue?
