Does Obama’s Hermana Look Like an Hermana?

1:19 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · race|US Presidential Race 2008|Women · Comments Off

18 Jul 2008

obamassis.jpgSomeone thinks that Barack Obama’s sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, looks like an hermana, one of us and that looking Latina could help with the Latino vote. Cuahtemoc Figueroa, the director of Mr. Obama’s Latino vote effort is quoted in the NYT as saying:

“She speaks fluent Spanish, with a Dominican accent, and looks Latina,”

I couldn’t find a video of Soetoro-Ng speaking Spanish but listen to how she says “Barack”.

252.jpgSo just how big is this U.S. Latino population that politicians keep talking about? The official number is usually reported is around 45 million. Except, as the National Institute for Latino Policy points out, this excludes about 4 million Latinos, Latinos who are U.S. citizens living in Puerto Rico and the other U.S. territories.

So while Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama kissed Rican ass during primary season, because of the fact that Ricans cannot vote in the regular presidential elections, they are not even counted as part of the U.S. Latino electorate.

Jenny from the Block to Endorse Barack Obama?

12:41 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|US Presidential Race 2008 · Comments Off

12 Jun 2008

jlopez.jpgTeam Barack Obama might just get his biggest Latino endorsement.

Jennifer Lopez was spotted inside the Senate Office Building for a mysterious meeting inside presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama’s office.

Hmm what could they have been talking about? Certainly not about her career or her babies. Maybe they’ll make a video together? J. Lo herself was keeping her lips sealed.

When asked what brought her to the Hill, Lopez smiled.
“I’m not ready to do any press yet,” she said, her eyes hidden behind a pair of big, black sunglasses…Rumors circulated that Lopez may be writing Obama a song.

Are you sure she’s not working for Hillary supporters?

McCain’s Got the Latino Problem Now

1:44 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · US Presidential Race 2008 · Comments Off

9 Jun 2008

obama_mccain.jpegTurns out that all that hype about Latinos not voting for a black candidate, specifically Barack Obama, is just that, hype.

A new Gallup Poll summary of surveys taken in May shows Obama winning 62% of Latino registered voters nationwide, compared with just 29% for McCain. Others have found a wide gap as well. The pro-Democratic group Democracy Corps compiled surveys from March through May that showed Obama with a 19-point lead among Latinos. And a Times poll published last month showed Obama leading McCain among California Latinos by 14 points.
Republicans say McCain’s numbers among Latinos at the moment are disappointing — far below the goals set by a campaign that has long believed McCain could challenge the traditional Democratic dominance of the Latino electorate.

01hillary.xlarge1.jpgHillary Clinton won the Puerto Rican primary yesterday and the reaction is exactly as I expected. Everyone is using the nearly 2-1 Clinton victory in Puerto Rico as proof that her candidacy still has viability. Even though, as Liza over at Culture Kitchen points out:

Some poll workers in small towns started abandoning the polling stations because turnout was so low, he said.
Part of the reason for the lack of interest, he said, is because voters feel the primary isn’t meaningful since Puerto Ricans cannot vote in the general election.
The Democratic and Republican parties run the primaries and caucuses, and they allow U.S. territories, such as the commonwealth of Puerto Rico, to take part in the process.
But only the 50 states and the District of Columbia vote in the general election.
El Nuevo Día reports the Board of Elections expected to have 600.000 voters. The Clinton campaign bargained on a million and more. Less than 400.000 people woke up this morning with the primaries in their minds.

2315925994_b593197a7c_m.jpgAs much as it makes me shudder and as much as I struggle to wrap my brain around it, there are a large number of Latino Republicans. With John McCain pretty much crowned the Republican presidential nominee the focus is on that oh so important Latino vote.

The Spanish language media is all over McCain for his role in formulating immigration reform, including sponsoring a bill on immigration reform that now he wants nothing to do with. Republican Latinos take note.

Seriously, this is pandering of the worst kind. Teddy Kennedy might have been better off singing a reggaeton song to get the Latino youth vote pero this..

Ugly Betty Vs. George Lopez

10:48 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Politics|Texas|US Presidential Race 2008 · Comments Off

27 Feb 2008

GeorgeLopez.jpgGeorge Lopez apparently got over feeling dissed by the Democratic front-runners and has decided to throw his weight behind Barack Obama.

Comedian and television star George Lopez will be appearing today in El Paso on behalf of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.

Hillary has Ugly Betty in her camp (how many times can you spot her in this video?).
