Name: Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez
Age: 33
Occupation: singer, songwriter, guitarist
Place of Residence: Miami and MedellÃn
Bio: From Wikipedia: “Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez, is a Colombian singer ,songwriter and guitarist born in MedellÃn. When he was younger, his father started calling him Juanes, rather than Juan, a contraction of his two first names Juan and Esteban. As his friends grew to know him by this name, he chose to keep it for his musical career, which started when he, Andrés GarcÃa, Fernando “Toby” Tobón and José David Lopera, formed the rock band Ekhymosis.” Juanes went solo in 2000 after the band broke up. His debut album, Fijate Bien earned him three Latin Grammys. In the 2005 Latin Grammys, Juanes won three additional awards to his nine previous Grammy awards. Juanes just completed his world wide “Mi Sangre” tour and is resting up, but first he became a Knight in France.
Yesterday morning in New Orleans Latin Jazz musician Hilton Ruiz passed away. The 54 year old pianist had been comatose at East Jefferson General Hospital since May 19 in front of a French Quarter bar. There are conflicting reports as to what exactly went down on the 19th. The official cause of the coma was listed as a fall when Ruiz hit his head outside of a Bourbon Street bar. Family and friends insist that Hilton Ruiz, who had been in New Orleans working on a Hurricane Katrina benefit project, was mugged and severely beaten.
The New York born artist was considered a child prodigy and graced the stage of Carnagie Hall at the young age of 8. Besides recording his own albums, his first at age 14, Ruiz also recorded with artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Charles Mingus and Betty Carter.

Thank you all of you who joined us for VL’s first live blog. I know that Jen and I had a great time watching and writing our reactions to the Premio lo Nuestro. We all know who won pero I’m not quite done (Mira, I rhymed). I agree with Jennifer who reported that the sound quality overall was horrible. The theme of the evening to me seemed to be the growth of two major Latino musical genres: reggaeton and pop. A clear sign of this was the fact that Daddy Yankee was seated next to honorary Latina (will you all be happy with that?) Laura Pausini. Did you all peep Fat Joe sitting in the audience?
