From the official press release:
The Latino Commission on AIDS mourns the passing of its founder, Dennis de Leon, a tireless advocate for social justice and one of the first openly HIV-positive Latino leaders in the country. He was a pioneer and a visionary, and in his lifetime he sought to curb and eliminate health disparities among marginalized communities. As a lawyer and later a non-profit executive, deLeon believed in bridging cultural differences to effect progressive social change.
For 15 years, de Leon was the President of the Latino Commission on AIDS, a national service and advocacy organization addressing HIV/AIDS and health disparities in the Latino community nationwide.
deLeon, 61, was one of the first city officials to announce that he was infected with the virus that causes AIDS. The cause of death was heart failure.

Today is World AIDS Day, a day to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS around the world. Late last night I received an email from the Latino Commission on AIDS on the state of the Latino community in terms of not just infection rates but perhaps more critically now, rates of testing.
Latinos in the U.S. represent 15.3% (U.S. Census Bureau) of the population but account for 19.0% of people living with AIDS and are reported to be 18.0 % of those living with an undiagnosed HIV infection (According to CDC figures for only 34 States, which do not include Puerto Rico)… CDC data shows that Latinos progress to AIDS faster than any other racial or ethnic group with 42% being diagnosed with AIDS within 12 months after learning of their positive HIV status compared to 34% late diagnosis among white non Hispanic and 35% among blacks.

Last night, An super secret source was inside the taping for an episode of next season’s Top Chef. The episode of the hit Bravo show was filmed on 27th street on the East Side and involved the contestants cooking food for an AIDS organization. The winner was chosen by the people at the dinner (about 300) placing red ribbons on the dish they liked best.
Also present at the taping was Miss Universe, Venezolana Dayana Mendoza. She was fully clothed, unlike the recent fotos of her that have surfaced. My source said that Mendoza is tall, slim, and with booty to spare.
Makes sense that she was at this AIDS charity themed Top Chef challenge, as she is the latest madrina for the Latino Commission on AIDS.
By the way the president of Miss Universe, Paula M. Shugart, said that Mendoza is not in danger of losing her crown over the recently revealed nekkid pics.

Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal continues to do good work both on the screen and off. His latest good work is being recognized on May 23 by the Latino Commission on AIDS. Bernal will receive the ILKA award and named as the International Ambassador for the Latino Commission on AIDS 2007 at the annual Cielo Latino benefit to be held at Cipriani Wall Street. Bernal is quoted as saying:
Each person has to fight their own battle to get rid of the silence on our own families. This is a problem that goes way beyond just our families and a problem that every day has more to do with entire nations, populations, and huge numbers of individuals who suffer with this illness. My participation in dealing with this problem is going to be more active to help eradicate the silenceon a much more universal level.

La flaca mas bella del Universo aka Puerto Rican Zuleyka Rivera is using the power of her crown to represent the Latino community for a very worthy cause. Today she was appointed the International Ambassador for the Latino Commission on AIDS. In that role she will support local, regional, national and international initiatives in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention, health education, capacity building and advocacy. The 18 year old Salinas native said:
I want to encourage HIV/AIDS awareness and education for my peers, but more importantly, I want to be an example for everyone who is afraid of being tested. Together we can all work toward the mutual goal of protecting our loved ones and our communities.
