image002.jpgI was purposely and unusually quiet regarding the March issue of Latina magazine featuring controversial Latina (or not) actress Jessica Alba. I, along with many, was disturbed by her comments targeted at Latinas in general and Mexicans specifically. The cover story, gave Alba a chance to explain herself. Read the article for yourself to decide if you buy her explanation. Here’s a snippet:

“No one gives Cameron Diaz a hard time for not speaking Spanish,” says Alba. “Her dad’s Cuban, and I was telling her I feel so bad because everyone is so nasty to me for not speaking Spanish. She’s like, ‘I don’t speak Spanish! I barely speak English!’,” says the pregnant star with a laugh.

28_liv_jlo_photo_04-28-2006_V16GV5C.jpgJLo graces the cover of this year’s People en Español 50 Most Beautiful People issue, which hits newsstands this coming Monday. In the issue, JLo reveals:

“I’ve never tried to hide the fact that I’m Latina,” the Bronx-native tells the magazine. “I think that’s why Hispanics are like ‘she’s ours … she belongs to us.’ And that’s true; with the Latino community, I am theirs, I do belong to them.”

Jenny’s still from the block, big whoop. The more interesting chisme is that she might get her own reality show on MTV:

Singer/actress Jennifer Lopez is reportedly in talks with MTV brass to develop a weekly reality show, which will specifically revolve around her own life.

The show is supposed to be a close reflection of Lopez’s life, and will focus on various facets of her life including helping dancers who are trying to make it big in the industry.

The producers are still working on the exact theme of the show, but sources reveal that the groundwork is on in full swing.

Alba001.jpgSpanish media is reporting today on a survey (“The 99 Most Desirable Women”) featured on Askmen.com which asked the question: who would you most want for a long-term girlfriend? American men answered: Jessica Alba.

The full list of “desirable women” will be released tomorrow on Askmen.com.

¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina!

soyunica.gifI just stumbled upon this site targeted for 9 to 14-year-old girls, ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina!, sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). They estimate that in under 15 years, 1 in 5 children in the US will be of Hispanic origin. The site and program is a response to the fact that Hispanic girls have higher rates of pregnancy, depression, and suicide than any other racial group.

Some people may ask you “Are you a Latina or are you American?”

¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! is really a great site with lots of information and activities for the girls. The What it Means to be Bicultural is a nice example of their articles.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to choose one or the other!

With sections on “Your Family”, “Your Body”, “Your Future”, and more, the site is very complete. Girls can find out “How to Become a Doctor”, Recipes for Day of the Dead, and even “Ask the Doctor” questions about health/body questions.

Available in English and in Spanish, I recommend that our readers share the site with the 9-14 year old girls in their lives.
