After an insane day dealing with the NYC transit system (seriously people , three inches of rain shuts the whole thing down and 24 hours later in my ‘hood of Queens , the subways still aren’t up 100%)a little music is in order to put it all in perspective. Manu Chao is coming out with a new album in less than a month (September 4th).

They haven’t had a studio album as a band in 5 years. Is anyone else as excited as I am about the Aterciopelados‘ upcoming album Oye!? The album is scheduled to be released on October 24th. That’s also when the band is set to begin a tour in Spain. You can get a sneak preview of the album, specifically the single Complemento on the band’s MySpace page.

Reggaeton may be all the rage but VL recognizes that as Latin music develops and new genres unfold, there are undeniable roots to Latin music that need to be respected and revisted. With that in mind, VL presents Raices, a look at classic artistas of la musica Latina.
With recent word that her husband, Don Pedro Knight, is in grave health, today we look at la reina de la salsa, Celia Cruz.
Celia was born Ursula Hilaria Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso on October 21, 1925 in the Santo Suarez barrio of Havana, Cuba to parents Catalina Alfonso and Simon Cruz.

As evidence of the fact that mainstream media continues to see Latinos as retrograde, this snippet from a very “surprised” article about the Latino techno movement:
Electronic and Latin music would seem to reside at polar ends of the music spectrum. One is precise, the other passionate. One is the brutalist Bauhaus beats of Kraftwerk, the other is the languid romanticism of the Buena Vista Social Club.
Why Buena Vista Social Club? Why is that the quintessential “Latin music”?

Colombiana Shakira has been defending her right, to sing in English. She’s been striking back against those that criticize her decision to crossover and sing in English. Shaki says que:
…ella canta en inglés porque se trata de estar abierta a otras culturas y de construir puentes.
I’m sure the money doesn’t hurt either and bueno why should it? As much as artists want to defend their artistic integrity, they are also doing a job and doing a job means getting paid. For Latino stars getting paid more means playing to English speaking consumers. I mean if she really wants to build bridges and be open to other cultures, when is her Chinese album coming out? Do your thing mujer, just make sure you don’t alienate those who supported you when you were running around with los pies descalzos.
