According to various news sources, Gloria Estefan’s tour through Spain beginning August 22nd, titled 90 Millas, as in the distance that separates Cuba and Florida, will be her last. The Cuban artista wants to dedicate her time to her daughter writing children’s books we would never buy our kids and getting the Castro’s out of Cuba (ok we made that last one up).
This morning, the Latin Recording Academy, that is pretty much run by the Estefans, or so feel many in the Latin music industry, announces that Gloria Estefan will be the 2008 LATIN RECORDING ACADEMY PERSON OF THE YEAR. Isn’t that kind of like rewarding yourself?
You can see the complete Latin Recording Academy press release after the jump.

Actual Latin Grammy coverage will begin when I arrive in sin city, on Wednesday November 7. This is one time where whatever happens in Vegas will not stay in Vegas. It will all be reported to you.

12 Oct 2007Ven A Mi Casa Esta Navidad
Voz Veis
Luis Miguel Leal, video director; Jorge Barboza, video producer
This video is meant to pull at your heartstrings and make you nostalgic for family Christmases past. I don’t think it has much of a chance in this category and anyway corny Navidad vids just don’t do it for me.

Legendary singer and cultural icon Chavela Vargas, 88, is about to receive a Latin Grammy award for her achievements in music. But according to Spain’s Publico, she doesn’t give a damn:
“I’m a little confused, because I don’t understand it. They are giving it to me now, after 40 years?”, the singer asked…Without beating around the bush, the popular singer added that important awards have been given to her by the public, not by record companies. “I have one of the biggest awards that is given out and only one woman in Latin America has it, which is me: the Great Cross of the Order of Isabel la Católica,” the singer said proudly.

3 Oct 2007I looooooove Calle 13. Last year Ivy Queen was hating on them for all the Latin Grammy Awards they won. Let’s see if this year is a repeat. I think they have a good chance in this category.

For all of you out there who are fed up with hearing Hips Don’t Lie, you’ll have to get used to the fact that it ain’t going anywhere anytime soon. That’s because Shakira has been nominated for 6 Latin Grammy awards this year, so you’ll be hearing it in lead up ad nauseum, though it wasn’t nominated (is it because it’s in English?) giving way to La Tortura.
Second in line with the most nominations are several old faves, each with four nods:
Poetic singer/songwriter Ricardo Arjona, Argentine rocker Gustavo Cerati and Mexican pop/alternative chanteusse Julieta Venegas with four nods each. Cerati’s album, “Ahi Vamos,” will compete in the album of the year category against Shakira and Venegas’ “Sal y Limon.”
The awards will air on Univision on November 2nd, and since God knows they won’t give us press credentials, we’ll likely be live-blogging it from our couches.
