Rene%20Lavin%2C%20Tego%20Calderon%20001.jpgMost Cuban celebs aren’t quiet about their political postions, especially when it comes to their feelings about their beloved patria. Last Friday at the 7th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, actor René Lavan, who was a presenter, proved to be no exception. Backstage at Madison Square Garden, Lavan, who was born in Artemisa, Cuba said that if Ernesto “el Che” Guevara were alive today he would be like an Osama Bin Laden. This was said while Lavan spoke about his role as Miguel in yet another film about el Che Guevara. The film, Guerrilla, in pre- production now and set to be released in 2008 stars Benecio Del Toro. Del Toro plays el Che during a visit to New York City to address the United Nations.

Oreja%20de%20Van%20Gogh.jpgSpanish pop group la Oreja de Van Gogh took home a Latin Grammy Award on Friday evening for Best Pop Album By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, but according to some they sure didn’t deserve any fashion awards. Backstage after they won a style reporter for a certain NYC based Spanish langauge newspaper dised lead vocalist Amaia Montero and a bandmate by asking and I quote, ” Why are you dressed like that?”. Amaia Montero was obviously offended and pointed out that the shirt she was wearing was Gucci and called the reporter “floja”. No wonder the music industry is going down the toilet…..too many people worrying about what musicians have on their backs instead of what kind of music they are making.

So unfortunately , La Mala was live at the 7th Annual Latin Grammy Awards but you all couldn’t be because of the ahem, less than helpful tech team at MSG couldn’t hook me up online.

Gustavo.jpgDuring the pre-telecast awards, el Rock Latino ruled.
Gustavo Cerati, won two awards, Best Rock Solo Vocal Album and Best Rock Song for Crimen. For those like me, who have been following Cerati from his Soda Stereo days, will be disappointed to hear that Soda Stereo has no plans in the near future to reunite but that it’s never out of the question.

Julieta%20Venegas.jpgThe darling of rock Mexicana Julieta Venegas won Best Alternative Music Album for Limon y Sal.

Best%20tropical.jpgTropical music is such a huge genre, including salsa and merengue, that all its facets couldn’t fit in the telecast alone so some awards were given in the pre-telecast. Included was best Traditional Tropical Album which went to Andy Montanez. He dedicated the award to his wife and Puerto Rico, saying that his win was a dream come true.
