She is credited with making the phrase “Ni una muerta mas,” (not one more dead woman) but 36 year old Susanna Chavez, an activist and poet who struggled for justice for the countless dead and disappeared women of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico became una mas when her body was found on Dia de los Reyes, January 6. She had been strangled and her left hand had been cut off.

What has happened since her body was found and identified follows the pattern of what some have called cover-ups to outright indifference regarding the death and disappearances in the Juarez region. Mexican officials say that Sanchez’s murder was not related to her activism or drug violence. Rather, Mexican officials seem to be engaging in some victim blaming.

It may be old news already for some, since MAC & Rodarte have officially apologized for their Fall 2010 fashion and makeup collection based on what the designers felt and thought they saw in the border city of Juarez.

The blushes, lip glosses, eyeshadows and nail polishes were given names like “factory,” “Juarez,” “Ghost town,” “del Norte,” and “quinceanera” and look like this:

The models bear no resemblance to the hijas mourned over, hijas like Solangie Medina.

Amnesty International Video About Femicides in Juarez

Women raped, murdered and disappeared in Juarez continues to be an ongoing situation. With over 400 cases reported and an unknown number not reported, the issue fades in and out of the public eye.

I would like to know of ways to support local organizations and local families in and around Juarez. Organizations without big budgets so that the mujeres of Juarez can live and rest in peace.

A grave containing 9 bodies was discovered over the weekend in Juarez, Mexico, and all signs point to the fact that this is yet another bloody chapter in Mexico’s on-going drug wars. CNN reports:

Investigators have yet to determine the identities of the seven men and two women found in the grave, Gonzalez said. They have not released information on how they were killed or how long they have been there.

Juarez, which is across the border from El Paso, Texas, has become one of the major battlegrounds as drug cartels fight both each other and Mexican authorities. The conflict has made violence increasingly common in Juarez, Tijuana and other Mexican border towns.

The discovery coincides with the arrival of some 5,000 Mexican troops dispatched to Ciudad Juarez in an effort to put a stop the the heightening violence in the city.

To get a sense for what drug violence is doing to Ciudad Juarez (incidentally also infamous for the mysterious murders of hundreds of women over the past several years), have a look at the above video from the YouTube and Pulitzer Center “Project: Report” project.

18_diana.jpgDid you know:

In Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua Mexico, over 400 women and girls have been killed or disappeared in the past thirteen years.

An alarming number of these cases remain unsolved.

Federal authorities acknowledge that 177 state officials had acted negligently. Not one of them has been brought to justice.

Incredible, but true. Don’t you agree that something should be done? The Mexican government’s lax attitude toward what is amounting to genocide is disgraceful, and is allowing more and more deaths and disappearances of young Mexican women to take place.
