Juanes shakes up parliament

5:46 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Activism|Celebrities|Music|World · Comments Off

20 Apr 2006

410603.jpgIn an effort to raise awareness of the problem of land mines, singer Juanes did a rare performance at the European parliament in Brussels:

Colombian singer Juanes, guitar in hand, made the “eurodiputados” stand up and dance. The reason was to call attention to the issue of landmines.

Yes, the parliamentarians really were up on their feet and dancing around. Don’t believe me? Watch this video (warning: not for the faint of heart or those violently opposed to acts of incredibly soul-less dancing).

At the end of the performance, Juanes was awarded a certificate for 2.5 million euros from the Parliament to aid in the elimination of land mines in his native Colombia.

Juanes is becoming Latin America’s Bono. For his program “Europe and Latin America: Mind your Step”, he spoke to the Parliament on behalf of Colombia like a statesman, before rocking their stuffed suited little butts out of the Eurocámara. Epa!

You can watch a longer video of the performance (more Juanes, less eurodancing) here. (Courtesy Europarl.es)

juanes-3.jpg Yesterday Colombian singer Juanes announced a star studded lineup, including Carlos Vives and Alejandro Sanz, for a May 24th benefit concert at the Gibson amphitheater in Los Angeles. Colombia sin minas seeks to raise money for children that were victims of anti-personal mines in Colombia. Colombia ranks third for the most activated mines, just behind Afghanistan and Chechnya. Juanes wants to raise awareness and in a statement said:

Many people, including some media, are not informed about how severe this problem is in Colombia, where there is an average of three dead people because of this artifacts.

The event is sponsored by the Mines Observatory from the Colombian Vice-presidency, UNICEF Colombia, and the United for Colombia Foundation, and the Adopt-a-minefield foundation.

JUANEs-2.jpgLast week Mala reported on Shakira’s claim that her crossover into the English language market had nothing to do with money. It seems that not all the money in the world, his label’s pressure or potential for fame in Europe will make Juanes do it:

The artist is doing so while performing in his native language. Juanes — whose full name is Juan Esteban Aristizabal — speaks English fluently, but is not interested in it for singing.

“I’m still thinking in Espanol, I still dream in Espanol, and I write my music in Espanol,” he says. “I don’t see why I need to change.”

Brits not warming up to Latino artists

Juanes-BW1_thm.jpgThe UK’s Telegraph has a fascinating piece on how Spanish-language musical artists have triumphed with tunes in español in virtually every country — except England. The perfect example is Colombian superstar Juanes, all but unknown in the UK:

People magazine called him a cross between Bruce Springsteen and Bono. Time magazine nominated him as one of the 100 most influential people in the world today. So why haven’t we heard of him in this country?

ap_Alejandro_Sanz_04nov05_210.jpgIt’s just my own personal opinion, but in spite of the fact that there was a greater sense of sponteneity and a more laid-back atmosphere this year (presenters that struggled with English could finally relax and deliver their lines in Spanish), I had higher hopes for this year’s entrega.

First of all, I don’t know who decided it was a good idea to put plasticman Eduardo Santamarina up there as a host. He’s one of the worst actors in Mexico (and that says a lot, given that he’s a telenovela actor) and turned out to be an even worse presenter. That same person must have thought that Rebecca de Alba was a good pick. Yes, she’s beautiful, but she was BORING. Her tone was as if she was presenting the Nobel Peace Prize or something.

Paulina Doubles Up on Next Album

2:36 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Music · Comments Off

672_con_paulina1.jpgPaulina Rubio is taking a leap on her next album, set for release in 2006, by making it a double whammy, according to Esmas.com (via Ticias.com, she’s going the Shakira route and recording one in English and another in Spanish:

Pese a no dar muchos detalles ante los medios, sí que pudo asegurar que un álbum será en inglés y otro en español y que actualmente está escribiendo temas con artistas como Juanes, Alejandro Sanz y Coti.

I’m sure she’s counting on Alejandro giving her songs that extra “no sé qué” found on his collaborations with Shakira.

In other Paulina-related news, it seems “la chica dorada” has been doing some weird stuff lately. Last week, she apparently got pissed and decided to skip out on a TV appearance in Chile. This week, the news is that, contrary to the article above, Juanes has no knowledge of a collaboration with Paulina on her new album.

Premios Juventud coming your way

juanesjuvent1.jpgWith categories like “the Paparazzi’s favorite target” (Niurka Marcos, maybe? Lucero?) and “best moves” (uh…David Bisbal?) los Premios Juventud, which take place this Thursday in Miami, should be good times. Not to mention the huge names on the roster; to name just a few: Chayanne, Marc Anthony, Olga Ta
