Juanes says: “Legalize it!”

5:15 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Colombia|Drugs · Comments Off

25 Jun 2007

juanes123.jpgColombian rock superstar Juanes has a message for his country’s government: legalize it! Like many other prominent Colombian figures (Gabo included) Juanes believes that depenalizing drug use and sales could lead to a decline in drug related violence and mafias. According to Spain’s 20 Minutos:

“We have to start thinking about depenalizing some part of this, to try to minimize and weaken this mafia,” said the singer, who clarified that his proposal is for the long term and he admitted that his country still isn’t ready to start that debate.

“It’s been 5 decades of a war that doesn’t end, and it won’t end as long as it’s so productive.”

Expect a lot of pundits both in Colombia and here in the U.S. to have a strong opinion about this idea.

Juanes and wife are no more

1:22 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes|Music · Comments Off

25 May 2007

juanes_3.jpgIf there were ever a couple in the world of Latino entertainment that we thought was solid, it was Juanes and his Mrs., Karen. But sadly, after three years together and 2 children, the Colombian superstar and his wife have decided to part ways:

They decided to part after months of trying to resolve their differences, the magazine reports. They will remain friends and are committed to their two daughters together, Paloma, 4, and Luna, 3.

For now, the girls will remain with their mother, who is pursuing an acting career in the U.S. Juanes is recording his forthcoming album in America.

Whether the singer’s hiatus last year had anything to do with a struggle for his marriage isn’t clear.

It’s el mundo al revés when Juanes and Karen separate and JLo and Marc Anthony are still together.

VLMIL Candidate #10: Juanes

12:45 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Music|Polls2006|VivirLatino · 1 Comment

juanes.jpg Name: Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez
Age: 33
Occupation: singer, songwriter, guitarist
Place of Residence: Miami and Medellín
Bio: From Wikipedia: “Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez, is a Colombian singer ,songwriter and guitarist born in Medellín. When he was younger, his father started calling him Juanes, rather than Juan, a contraction of his two first names Juan and Esteban. As his friends grew to know him by this name, he chose to keep it for his musical career, which started when he, Andrés García, Fernando “Toby” Tobón and José David Lopera, formed the rock band Ekhymosis.” Juanes went solo in 2000 after the band broke up. His debut album, Fijate Bien earned him three Latin Grammys. In the 2005 Latin Grammys, Juanes won three additional awards to his nine previous Grammy awards. Juanes just completed his world wide “Mi Sangre” tour and is resting up, but first he became a Knight in France.

Juanes gets knighted in France

7:18 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Colombia|france · Comments Off

20 Jul 2006

juanes.jpgThe man who a lot of women consider their ideal knight in shining armor has been knighted in the true sense. Colombian rockero Juanes received earlier this week one of France’s highest honors, becoming “Knight of the French Order of Arts and Letters”, awarded him by the Ministry of Culture and Art.

He may be a knight, but he’s not getting all big-headed about it:

True to his humble nature, Juanes shared that he was surprised to be getting the decoration. “I am just a musician who enjoys what he does, and a Colombian who dreams and fights for peace in his country, nothing more,” the star said.

France has bestowed this award upon Juanes because of his “significant contributions to the arts.”

I think it’s pretty amazing that an artist receive this decoration so (relatively) early in his career, and this goes to show that you don’t have to sing in English to “cross over”.

10 Jul 2006

juanes400.JPGColombian rockero Juanes is retiring, but don’t start crying yet. The performer says the hiatus will only be temporary. He’s been on the road too long, so he’ll be taking a year-long break to rest at his home in Medellín:

“I’ll devote more time to my family, many more hours in the studio and I also need to work more on the objectives laid out by my Mi Sangre foundation,” the singer told Globovision.com. Juanes hit it big with his album Mi sangre which has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide since it was released in 2004 and has been the number one hit in 32 countries.

According to People en Español, Juanes will also be dedicating some time to a hobby he feels passionate about: gardening.

Salma-Hayek.jpgColombian rocker Juanes and Mexican actress Salma Hayek joined forces with actress Ashley Judd this week to raise awareness about AIDS in Guatemala:

“I know that there is misinformation, that there is a stigma and superstitions that only contribute to the spread of AIDS,” Judd, world ambassador for the Washington-based YouthAIDS group, said while visiting an AIDS clinic run by Maryknoll nuns in the town of Coatepeque, 165 kilometers (100 miles) west of Guatemala City.

Fellow actress Salma Hayek and Colombian singer Juanes, who also represent the group, were expected to join Judd later Tuesday. The three planned to stay in Guatemala for several days, during which time they will meet with President Oscar Berger to discuss the AIDS situation in the country. Judd and Hayek will then continue the tour in Honduras and Nicaragua.

Salma had been scheduled to fly out to Guatemala earlier, but postponed her trip in observance of the May 1 boycott on Monday.
