24 Dec 2009It’s the original bi-lingual English/Spanish Christmas song full of cheese and employed too often as proof that a holiday celebration is “diverse”. Pero I know in casa Mala, it’s the favorite of my younger daughter who thinks it’s the best song up there with “twinkle twinkle”
I wonder if Jose Feliciano ever gets tired of singing that song? Even if he does, he certainly isn’t appreciative of peeps taking it and twisting it into an anti-migrant “spoof”.

I didn’t watch the Grammy Awards last night. I must be getting old because I don’t know who half the people nominated were. Pero even before M.I.A shook her pregnant pansa up on the stage (mas on that later), Latinos got their awards in the untelevised portion of the show, porque really who cares about Latin music anyway? In fact, most Latin musicians didn’t even go to get their awards, not even Juanes, who is pictured getting an award last year. This yeah Gustavo Santaolalla accepted the award for Mejor Latin Pop Album. Juanes was kind enough to send a message though saying he dedicated the honor to those held hostage in the Colombian jungle.
Best Latin Rock Or Alternative Album went to Jaguares, whom I’ve never liked. I wanted Locos Por Juana to win.
As much as I hate so many holidays, I can’t help but get excited about Christmas. I am working on a longer post about my personal navidad memories and traditions rooted in Ricanness but also in my parents’ sense of upward mobility and assimilation. Pero first welcome to the official kick off of the holiday season here at VL.
What do you celebrate around this time of year, if anything?
P.S. : Check after the jump for info about Jose Feliciano’s tour including the only “Latino” holiday song that gringos know and insist on singing if you’re the token Latino at the holiday party.

With his Feliz Navidad being the top holiday song it seems fitting that later today
Jose Feliciano perform and ring the closing bell at the NASDAQ Stock Exchange here in New York City. Talk about ringing in the holiday.

I’m a sucker for the traditional trappings of navidad. This includes Christmas music in both English and Spanish. According to a recent press release, I am not alone.
In a report this week in USA Today about the latest National Airplay Audience Chart From Nielsen BDS and Arbitron, “Feliz Navidad” has ascended to the #1 position as the country’s most broadcast/favorite holiday song. This rise to the top of the holiday radio playlists follows the song’s astounding pattern of continued sales increases in recent years– even 35 years after its release. The public’s love of “Feliz Navidad,” is also represented by the fact that the track is currently the #1 selling Latin song at iTunes and the #2 overall selling holiday download at the dominant online music site – for the second year in a row.
