The above ad, released late last week by the McCain camp, is supposed to appeal to Latinos.

The McCain campaign said Hispanic voters are particularly open to the message because many of them are immigrants who came to the U.S. seeking to escape the sort of political tactics Mr. Chavez employs.

“They come to American for freedom, and yet Senator Obama seems overly willing to deal with a tin-pot dictator,” McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said.

Election time means political comedy. Sadly, this Saturday Night Live clip from this past weekend may have more truth to it than people want to admit.

The SanctuaryAs the presidential candidates point fingers about who had the better immigration policy and who has been a better friend to immigrant communities, one of the best options is to let the candidates’ own words speak for themselves.

This is easier to do when the candidates actually respond to requests for information. From The Sanctuary:

our original intent was to present a meaningful side-by-side comparison of the policies and positions of all presidential candidates in order to better inform voters, Senator McCain’s unwillingness to answer our questions, or to go on the record with his positions on the specific details covered in the questionnaire, has made this impossible. Senator McCain’s reluctance is all the more troubling in light of the fact that his previously published positions, available on his website, appear to directly contradict those in the official platform coming out of the Republican National Convention earlier this month. This has left many of us who are concerned about immigration reform at a loss to know exactly where the Senator actually stands on vital issues.

McCain and his campaign have refused to answer a comprehensive questionnaire about immigration reform. His silence in many ways speaks for itself about his commitment to the issue. In the meantime, read, after the jump, Senator Obama’s answers, in their entirety, to a questionnaire on immigration and related issues and then decide for yourself.

support-pic1.jpg2008 isn’t over, and already the number of unaccompanied minors crossing the border into the United States has passed the 10,000 mark.

More than 11,700 Mexican children and teenagers tried to cross the US border alone and were sent back to their native country in the first seven months of this year, Mexican migration officials said Wednesday.

Meanwhile ICE raids continue, people are dead, and John McCain and Barack Obama are pointing fingers.

logo.gifThe Latino vote is one of the most talked about target groups in this presidential election season. Everyone wants us to register, wants us to vote, but what is often forgotten is that Latino means many things, coming from many places. Puerto Ricans (yes there she goes again) have their own issues that demand attention along with other Latino groups, and one Rican organization is demanding that John McCain and Barack Obama respond to the specific interests of the Rican community.

The National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights, a social justice organization, has written a letter inviting the candidates to collaborate with the NCPRR to develop a means for communication with the Puerto Rican community.

“We are willing to work with the candidates to creatively set up a discussion that will allow our community to understand the candidates’ positions. Our children are also dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, and we should know what the future will bring from these candidates.” said Vazquez-Hernandez, a professor of history at Miami Dade College, who is a Vietnam Era veteran and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

Full disclosure : The NCPRR was the formative entity in terms of my political upbringing.

Ah U.S short term memory and the ability to be distracted is an amazing thing. Apparently all the flag waving, chants of U.S.A., and talk of Hockey Moms worked, as a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows John McCain leading over Barack Obama 54% to 44% among likely voters.

Poll numbers are constantly shifting and more often than not based on biased questions and perspectives, but regardless numbers are scary, especially since according to a USA TODAY article, the boost in numbers is credited to Sarah Palin.

The Republican National Convention has given John McCain and his party a significant boost, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken over the weekend shows, as running mate Sarah Palin helps close an “enthusiasm gap” that has dogged the GOP all year.

Last night, I was between laughter and tears watching the closing night of the RNC : Cindy McCain and her constant eye closing meant to inspire and say: “I am a nice white lady”, The McCain children coming out causing my older daughter to call out: “One of them is adopted,”, and the constant “Hockey Mom” references. The horrible screen behind the podium is distracting, but still more interesting than McCain’s speech. He totally stole Obama’s “change” line. He mentions the Latina daughter of migrant workers being “American” (unless she doesn’t have papers or is an “anchor baby” right?)

What did you think of the speech?

Last night, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin accepted the nomination to the vice-presidency at the Republican National Convention.

Originally the buzz about Palin, focused on her having a vagina. Her presence was analyzed as a calculated McCain strategy to lure disgruntled, hard core Hillary Clinton supporters.

Then the shift went internal, to her uterus, her identity as a mother to five, the youngest with some form of developmental delay, and a 17 year old daughter, unmarried and pregnant.

So what does this Palin parranda of information and analysis mean to mamis of color, Latina mamis like me? Not surprisingly, nada.
