Joe Biden has a reputation of being a bit of bumbling jackass when it comes to talking (remember the panic button he hit with his commentary on airplanes and swine flu?), but with his remarks on Edward Kennedy passing away, he even had me teary eyed.

An End to the Cuba Embargo? Fat Chance

For all of you who might have been looking to the Obama administration for an end to the mini cold war that is still being waged, some 40 years later, between the United States and Cuba, you’re out of luck. Vice President Joe Biden was in Viña del Mar, Chile last week for the Summit of Progressive Leaders and announced that this is not likely to happen anytime soon. Oh, but wait, we want Cubans to be free and, uh, this IS the Summit of Progressive Leaders! That must mean we are progressive!

The U.S. has no plans to lift its trade embargo on Cuba, Vice President Joe Biden told reporters today after a heads-of-government meeting in Chile.

“We think the Cuban people should determine their own fate and that they should be able to live in freedom and with some prospect of economic prosperity,” Biden said. “But Cuba is not the biggest challenge facing the hemisphere, the biggest challenge facing the hemisphere is the economy.”

So much for change we can believe in and the promise of extending the olive branch so prominent in Obama’s campaign platform.

But hold up, wait a minute: didn’t candidate Obama call for an end to the embargo when he was campaigning? An end to it because of its “damaging effects on the Cuban people”? Candidate Obama, where art thou?

If we were to make a list of the issues raised in last night’s Vice Presidential debate we would have:
health care
taxes
bailout
Iraq
Iran
Pakistan
Energy
gay marriage

Hmm what’s missing? Only the stories of countless people. Only what is whispered in the barrios: the fear, the constant watching of your back. What’s the word? Oh yeah, immigration.

During the VP debate last night, I was cracking up out loud at Dem VP candidate Joe Biden’s use of the term “Bosniak”.

Pero it seems that it is a real word and wasn’t a gaffe. According to Media Matters for America:

According to the U.S. State Department, as of 2002, the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina consisted of the following ethnic groups: “Bosniak 48.3%, Serb 34.0%, Croat 15.4%, others 2.3%.”

The CIA World Factbook states: “Bosniak has replaced Muslim as an ethnic term in part to avoid confusion with the religious term Muslim — an adherent of Islam.”

So far we’ve only had two presidential debates, and already tired of them. Sarah Palin’s performance yesterday wasn’t as bad as many expected/hoped. Pero her attempts to be cute just annoy me in the same way the other mothers at my daughter’s school annoy me with their fake ass ways.

Did you watch the debate last night? What did you think.

ice.jpgWhile everyone (myself included) VP debate drinking games, the U.S. federal government and ICE hope that their continued acts of terrorism against immigrant communities fly beneath the radar.

In a week’s time, ICE arrested 78 people in Pennsylvania and Delaware. The media is playing up the fact that some of those arrested had criminal records and in an effort to stir up fear, called an emergency meeting in the communities where the arrests happening.

The emergency of immigrant familias?

Tonight at 9 pm, join the VivirLatino vice-presidential debate party. Yours truely, Maegan la Mala, will be live tweeting the debate on twitter. Just follow @vivirlatino to get the updates.

For more fun, follow @mamitamala as well.

Pero even if you don’t follow the debate party online, Sarah Palin and Joe Biden, certainly will have us all watching. Will Biden say something stupid or racist? Will Palin mention hockey moms and seeing Russia from her house? Ay we can only hope so. We will have some analysis post debate (or the morning after depending on how the drinking game goes). In the meantime ponder this:

070201_JoeBiden_vl.widec.jpgThis morning, we woke up to the news that Barack Obama has chose Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware to be his running mate. I know I didn’t get the text message I signed up for but that might have been for the better. The announcement went out via text message and email at about 3 a.m.

Joe Biden has all the experience that Obama’s critics say the presidential nominee lacks. Biden is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Joe_Biden.jpgDemocratic Senator Joe Biden, who will soon be the Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee pointed the finger south of the border, blaming Mexico for “illegal” immigration and drugs entering the U.S.

Mexico is a country that is an erstwhile democracy where they have the greatest disparity of wealth,” Biden said. “It is one of the wealthiest countries in the hemisphere and because of a corrupt system that exists in Mexico, there is the 1 percent of the population at the top, a very small middle class and the rest is abject poverty.”

Unless the political dynamics change in Mexico and U.S. employers who hire illegal immigrants are punished, illegal immigration won’t stop. “All the rest is window dressing,” he said.

An even bigger problem are illegal drugs “coming up through corrupt Mexico,” he said. “People are driving across that border with tons, tons — hear me — tons of everything from byproducts for methamphetamines, to cocaine, to heroine.”
