Woman wants to look like Jessica Alba

February 8th, 2010

Speaking of Jessica Alba, the AP is reporting that a woman in China is attempting plastic surgery as a way to win her lover back. The woman wants to look like Jessica Alba.

The actress said Saturday she’s been distressed by Internet reports about a Chinese woman who is having a plastic surgery makeover to look like Alba in hopes of getting her lover back.

“I think you should never have to change yourself like that,” Alba said. “If somebody loves you, they’ll love you no matter what.”

I do think that it’s amazingly cool that Alba is speaking out against the type of “flattery” the woman in China is attempting. Hollywood seems to be a cesspool of unhealthy thinking and encouraging degrading behavior in women in particular–it’s nice to see an actor that cares enough to put the brakes on the Hollywood mentality.

I also think it’s important that Alba is not mocking the woman in China (i.e. what the fuck is wrong with her???) but pointing to the misogyny and sexism (assuming that the woman’s ex is male) that often grounds the Hollywood mentality. In other words, it’s *women* who must do anything to keep her partner–including horribly drastic surgery. Never the men. By putting the emphasis on the ex’s reaction (he shouldn’t expect crap like that out of her), I think Jessica is making a nice feminist intervention into the politics of “looks.”

Anyway. It’s a little thing what Jessica did (or maybe huge, if the woman changes her mind after hearing Jessica’s words)–but after debating Jessica’s reaction to her Latinidad–I thought it would be good to give her props for something.

Jesica Alba: Still Struggling

February 4th, 2010

In many ways, I really feel for Jessica Alba. I mean–really feel for her. She’s said some fucked up shit about being Mexican (remember the “spreading their seed” comment?). But–I think at the root of a lot of her fucked up comments is an extreme insecurity and anxiety about being Latina and being Mexican that I understand completely.

I don’t know about other Latin@ cultures–but as a Chicana (or Mexican-American, Hispanic, etc), I’ve found living life as somebody with immigrant Mexican roots can be incredibly difficult. All the markers the Mexican community uses to “identify” you as “one of us” are so unstable. In a settled community, you can be tall and light skinned and even unable to speak Spanish and still be considered a part of the community. In a more transient community with more first generation Mexicans–speaking Spanish often stands as the “test.” If you can’t do it, you’ve assimilated and have no claims or rights to the community no matter what your experiences are.

So–in a way, I really get what Alba’s getting at when she says, “I’m considered Latina and, thus, I consider myself Latina as well. I grew up eating enchiladas… I identify with Mexicans. It’s in my blood whether or not I speak Spanish.”

Not exactly the most elegant thing to say in the world. As Feminist Texican notes: Head. Meet Desk.

But at the same time, I still feel for Alba. I mean, it took me going to university and doing tons of reading of Chicana feminist texts to be able to 1. comfortably claim a Chicana identity and 2. use the appropriate words to talk about how unstable and anxiety provoking a Chicana identity often is.

It doesn’t sound like Alba has been to college or that her family really spends a lot of time speaking about and negotiating a Mexican-American identity in a non-assimilationist way. We aren’t just born with the knowledge of how to “be” politicized and fierce Chicanas, right? And most of us don’t have to struggle through our politics–or the politics that play out on our bodies (what does your dark hair mean? Your olive skin tone? Your unaccented tongue? etc)–on a public stage.

I know Alba is political in other ways (namely, she’s an animal rights activist). Which makes me think that she is capable of “hearing” a more radical politic when she wants to. And I know how difficult it is to actually find Chicana theory–you have to know what a Chicana is first (again, something I didn’t know until university)–how do you google something you don’t even know? So I volunteer as the most appropriate macha to talk to Ms. Alba. I will pass her a book by Gloria Anzaldua. And then sit and talk with her for a while.

I’ll make a radical Chicana out of her yet. :-)

Jessica Alba loves sharks and posing

June 10th, 2009

Yes, yes, yes, little Ms. Radical Macha loves the shit out of radical activists–including those that may or may not plaster photos of Gloria Anzaldua all over public property (ahem). So, my respect for Jessica I-may-or-may-not-like-being-Mexican-I’m-not-sure-yet Alba went up considerably when I read that she had done some vandalizing in the name of animal rights.

But then I read that I-believe-in-animal-rights-but-I-do-so-love-to-get-my-picture-taken Alba, well, was photographed doing her vandalizing–and that she even posed for the camera as well….and I was not quite so impressed any more.

Jessica Alba left many citizens of Oklahoma City seeing red white last week, when she blanketed the downtown area guerrilla-style with posters of great white sharks as part of an underground effort to draw attention to the predators’ dwindling population.

Unfortunately, the actress’ secret mission was outed yesterday, when photos of her plastering the posters around the city—and posing victoriously in front of a defaced United Way billboard—wound up online.

Ai, Jessica…I do so want to love you and hold you in my bosom. But you make it so difficult in so many ways. I must say though, I do like your hat.

OMG SHE’S NAKED!!!!

December 22nd, 2008

Are we supposed to be stunned by Ms. Aniston’s nakedness? Impressed? First of all, Salmita can kick Ms. Aniston’s ass at any time. Thank you. Second of all–are we as a culture so freaking denied that a *picture* of a naked woman turns us all into bumbling fools that masturbate behind big desks (Matt Lauer, get a damn grip)? It’s a naked chick, my friends. If you haven’t seen one recently, please surf some porn and calm down.

Third, is there some reason why classy pictures of near naked *women of color* are not fawned over to this extreme? I mean, the last ‘fawning’ came in the form of Jessica Alba’s “fat” body being downsized for a post-baby shoot. What kind of fawning in that? Oh, and I guess that JLo got some good press off her ass–but what happened to the rest of her body?

Will women of color ever be “known” for their whole bodies AND their work AND their complete and total sexiness?

We’re Starting to Feel Guilty for Dissin Jessica Alba. Should We Cut her Some Slack?

July 3rd, 2008

alba-bronce.jpgThe Unapologetic Mexican made us feel bed today about talking smack about Jessica Alba and her brown baby.

When it comes to her Latin roots, Jessica Alba has clearly had a change of heart.
Though she appeared to have distanced herself from her Mexican ancestry, the new mom is now desperate to keep her heritage alive through her daughter, Honor Marie, born June 7.
“Jessica wants to try to brush up on her language skills so that she can start speaking Spanish at home in front of Honor,” a friend of the 27-year-old tells OK!.
Having not spoken the language in years, the actress’ Spanish is little bit rusty, but she knows she needs to buckle down and re-learn it for her little girl.

So should we give Jessica another chance?

Fair Weather Latina Jessica Alba Gives Birth: Other Latina Moms Ignored

June 9th, 2008

jess-cash-b.jpgI’m telling you, the only time the media cares about Latinas having babies is when: 1. There is a fear of us having too many (especially if we are undocumented) and 2. If the Latina is famous.

Case in point fair weather Latina, Jessica Alba. Apparently she gave birth this weekend to a healthy baby girl, named Honor Marie Warren.

And here I was hoping the baby would be named Maria, Carmen, or Guadalupe.

Congrats to the familia.

But these are the mamis we need to be thinking about

Jessica Alba isn’t the Only Questionable Latina in this Month’s Latina

March 12th, 2008

image002.jpgI was purposely and unusually quiet regarding the March issue of Latina magazine featuring controversial Latina (or not) actress Jessica Alba. I, along with many, was disturbed by her comments targeted at Latinas in general and Mexicans specifically. The cover story, gave Alba a chance to explain herself. Read the article for yourself to decide if you buy her explanation. Here’s a snippet:

“No one gives Cameron Diaz a hard time for not speaking Spanish,” says Alba. “Her dad’s Cuban, and I was telling her I feel so bad because everyone is so nasty to me for not speaking Spanish. She’s like, ‘I don’t speak Spanish! I barely speak English!’,” says the pregnant star with a laugh.

Someone Needs to Tell Jessica Alba the Best Ass is Latina Ass

January 11th, 2008

jessica-alba.jpgI feel guilty about giving any play to Miss Alba, who clearly has identity issues to work out, but she’s quoted in a British rag talking about the often lauded assets of Latina women.

“I prefer some ass,” she tells Britain’s OK! magazine. “I think women that have a body, that are feminine, with a little shake – that’s what a woman is about.”

And just who does Jessica cite as her female inspirations? Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel and Angelina Jolie. Not a Latina or an ass in sight.
