The nominees for the Golden Globes were announced and there are some Spanish language names included.
The Spanish duo of Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz were nominated for Best Performance by an Actor and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, respectively, for their work in Woody Allan’s Vicky Christina Barcelona. Has anyone seen this film?
America Ferrera was nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Comedy Series or Musical for her work on Ugly Betty. Does anyone still watch that show?
After much anticipation, there is finally a trailer for the new Woody Allen film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, starring Spanish superstar couple Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johannson. From the clip, it’s easy to see the chemistry between Cruz and Bardem. But you can even see the chemistry between Cruz and Johansson. And dare I say that the trailer looks more like an Almodovar film than a Woody Allen film? I dare say it. Anyway, check it out and let us know what you think in the comments.
Woody Allen’s new movie, starring Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Scarlett Johannsen and strangely titled “Vicky Cristina Barcelona“ has been announced as part of the official selection for this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The head of the Festival, Thierry Frémaux, called the movie “a Spanish film that I hope you will watch with much pleasure.” He also noted that “Hollywood didn’t make movies about the Costa Brava in the 1950s, but perhaps Allen might launch a genre about Americans who go to Spain to sunbathe.” Perhaps something got lost in translation, but that seems like a weird comment.
I’m excited about this film, and am anxious to see how Allen handles the bilingual thing, and even more curious to see whether English-speaking audiences are receptive to a movie partly shot in Spanish. Others are buzzing about a sex scene involving both Penelope and Scarlett.
I have no inclination to get married myself (shhh don’t tell my partner) but I love me a good boda. While a Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz wedding is just bochinche at this point, I really hope it happens. They are a cute couple.
Spanish actor (and Jen’s boyfriend) Javier Bardem took one more step in getting closer to an Oscar thanks to the Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) giving him a Best Supporting Actor nod last night.
Bardem won for his supporting actor role as a cold-blooded killer in “No Country For Old Men” at a star-studded dinner at the Shrine auditorium in Los Angeles preceded by a red-carpet parade that even wintry rain failed to dampen.
Spanish actor (and boyfriend of Penelope Cruz?) Javier Bardem won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for best supporting actor for playing a killer in the movie No Country for Old Men. Is an Oscar to follow?
Award-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem says he owes a lot to paisanoAntonio Banderas for opening doors in the U.S. for Spanish actors like him.
“People like me have to thank Antonio Banderas for what he did when he took the step of coming to the United States. It’s not easy at all to pacck your bags and come to a foreign country to create a career for yourself when you don’t even speak the language.”
The niceties were spoken at a New York Times talk last week, where Javi went so far as to call out the Spanish actors who criticized Banderas’ decision to come to the U.S. to work:
“Few people want to recognize the work that Antonio had to do. In Spain we are very protective of our own [people] but there are people who can be very mean at the same time.”
According to the actor, “those who criticized Banderas, for example, are people who would sweat blood when they had to say one line in English,” though he didn’t mention any actor or actress by name.
Ooh, tell us who!
While Bardem may be right about opening doors, the fact is that Antonio Banderas was an excellent actor while he was in Spain. I’m not sure what happened after he came here. Let’s hope the same doesn’t happen to Bardem, but if his performance in No Country for Old Men is any indication, we have nothing to worry about.
Two of the hottest Spaniards in entertainment are now one blockbuster couple: Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem are together, reports Spanish chisme magazine Hola:
Oscar-nominated Spanish film stars Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, who are longtime friends, have started dating after working together on Woody Allen’s latest movie, Spanish weekly “Hola” reported.
The magazine published photos of Cruz, 33, in a black bikini beside Bardem, 38, wearing black swimming trunks, while on holiday in the Maldives on the cover of its latest edition, due to hit newsstands Thursday.
“The photos that confirm their relationship. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem in love in the Maldives,” it said in its front page headline.
In Spain, las malas lenguas are already talking smack about Pe, who they say ends up hooking up with every guy she co-stars with. That might be true, but I have to hand it to her, she hit the jackpot with this one. And it only took her 15 years; Javi and Penelope co-starred for the first time in 1992, in the Spanish comedy Jamón Jamón.
