Ah, Silvio Berlusconi. We’ve reported on the Italian Prime Minister a couple of times here on VL and none of it has been good news. In sharp contrast to the majority of the leaders of the countries within the European Union, Berlusconi has it out for immigrants and apparently will stop at nothing to advance his fascist ways in Italy, the country with the largest number of immigrants in Europe — some 7 million. In what may be his most disgusting move yet, Berlusconi’s government has crossed the line of common decency to make it obligatory for medical doctors to report undocumented patients. Reports The Telegraph:
The Italian parliament passed a bill on Thursday which will compel medical staff to contact the police if they believe that the patient they are treating does not have a valid visa or work permit.Opposition MPs condemned the measure as “racist” while doctors groups said it would turn them into informers of the kind last seen in Italy during Mussolini’s fascist regime.

Europe is buzzing with praise and criticism for Italian president Silvio Berlusconi’s [pictured] tough (read xenophobic) approach to immigration legislation.
According to the president’s new stance, being an undocumented immigrant in Italy will become a crime, punishable by up to 18 months in a detention center. In addition, local authorities will have the right to detain and order the expulsion of undocumented immigrants. Families petitioning the Italian government for visas based on reunification will have to submit to DNA testing. Renting an apartment to an undocumented immigrant will also become a crime, punishable by up to 4 years in prison, plus a fine of 50,000 euros. Oh, and they’ll confiscate the apartment.
That’s not all. If you are undocumented and you commit a crime, your sentence will be increased by 1/3 more than if you are Italian. That means if you are sentenced to 3 years in prison, tack on another if you are undocumented.
In response to these propositions — now approved by the Italian government — a few hundred protesters gathered in Napoles, where Berlusconi was at an event, shouting “No racism, no intolerance, equality!”, reports Spain’s El País.
Reading this got me thinking: could this happen in the U.S.? There certainly are bills which are moving our immigration legislation in this direction, but is a complete immigration overhaul of this magnitude possible in the U.S.? That’s a pretty scary thought.

An Italian pop star named Tizziano Ferro (sorry…who?) is at the center of a media firestorm in Mexico after saying Mexican women have moustaches. According to Spain’s 20 Minutos, the singer, who lived in Mexico for two years is not into Mexican girls (video, with Spanish subtitles, after the jump):
In an interview given to Italian media he stated that in Mexico it is completely impossible to find beautiful women because “they have moustaches”.It seems the only one not guilty is Salma Hayek: “It’s impossible to say that the most beautiful women in the world are in Mexico. No offense but…they have moustaches…I’m sorry, but they know it. Maybe not Salma…”, he said on the Che Tempo fai show on Italian network RAI.
After his mention of Mexican women’s moustaches on Italian TV, the program’s host warned Ferro that his insulting comment could offend all Mexican women, to which the singer replied “They know it”.

A few weeks ago we were embroiled in an entertaining debate about the meaning of the word “Latino”. We never denied that people from Latin America are tied in origin to the people of “Latin” Europe — the mediterranean countries whose influence is most certainly evident in some Latin American customs and cultural idiosyncrasies.
So what does it mean when Spaniards and Italians are ranked as the laziest in the world (okay, in Europe) with regard to housework?
Italian men spend the least number of hours on housework (only 1.35 hours). But not for this reason are Italian households more messy; their female partnersare the Europeans that spend the most hours on housework, up to 5.20 hours.
