26773.jpgI am not sure whether to applaud this or ask the question: “why internet cafes and not places for them to live?”:

The government of the Argentine capital inaugurated the first “cybercafe” for children and adolescents who live on the street, the first of five of these facilities expected to open in the city.

More than a simple cafe with internet access or just a place where one can play games online, the new facility is a “learning and recreation” space to help better the living conditions of “these children that have lost almost everything,” said Jorge Telerman, Mayor of Buenos Aires, during the opening of the cafe.

According to Spain’s 20 Minutos, these cafes will offer, on top of internet access, recreational and educational activities, and light meals.

The idea for this project was supposedly born from data that showed that homeless children in Argentina spent 60% of the money they receive panhandling on cybercafes.

While on the surface it seems like a great idea — providing internet access, and therefore access to information, education, and the world in general to these children — my mind can’t help but wonder why more basic needs aren’t covered first, like a home, foster parents, meals and education.

What do you think? Is this a good idea or does it overlook these children’s well-being?

“Proud American”: Campaign to debunk stereotypes

8 May 2006

proudamerican.jpgAP is reporting on a new internet-based campaign which states as its mission “combat stereotypes” of Latinos in the U.S.:

The site for the new “I am a Proud American” campaign, http://www.iamaproudamerican.com, was designed to cross ethnic and social lines and hook people, young and old, creators Bettina Nava and Max Fose said.

“Were hoping it’s edgy, it’s controversial,” said Nava, a Republican political consultant who has worked with Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record), R-Ariz. “I don’t know what the impact this endeavor is going to have in the end, but we couldn’t sit back and hear this rhetoric.

The campaign is also producing a series of videos depicting cultural stereotypes to illustrate the point.

layout_01.jpgMy friend Oso pointed me in the direction of a very intriguing documentary project being developed in the Bronx which proposes to explore how using social mediums such as blogs affects the lives of new immigrants:

What happens when immigrants in the Bronx start blogging? Can social media help people communicate better with friends and family back home? Can it help communities sustain themselves? The Bronx Blog Project is a multimedia documentary about community, immigration, homesickness, and technology. Focusing on the experiences of a handful of ESL students and utilizing video and the Internet, the project documents the effects of new communication technologies on people looking for better, cheaper ways to communicate to friends and family both in the United States and their home countries, and wishing to develop and maintain new communities in the U.S.

13 Feb 2006

lg-cssm.gifFrom the folks that bring you VivirLatino, Blogs Media is proud to announce a new site: CSS Manía.

What is CSS?

Well, it´s short for Cascading Style Sheet, and what you see here on the site is done using it. Basically it is: a simple mechanism for adding style (eg fonts, colors, spacing) to Web documents.

Why a CSS site?

Our founders explain: “We wanted to show that a small, Spanish-speaking company has the know-how and the ability to contribute to and compete in a large genre such as that of CSS Showcases. And at the same time, help this area evolve.”

Latinos Surfing in Two Worlds

1:13 pm By Maegan La Mala · Internet · Comments Off

26 Dec 2005

internet-reach-small.jpg Latinos in the U.S. don’t just live in two worlds, we web surf in two worlds too. According to an article in this month’s Hispanic Business, 70% of English speaking Latinos are plugged in. We prefer the English language internet when we’re at work (is that when you are reading VL?), while we gravitate to Spanish language or bilingual sites in the comfort of our homes. The article also states that:

11.3 million individuals (79 percent) expressed a preference for English or bilingual online materials. More specifically: 7.5 million of the total Hispanic audience (52 percent) prefer English and another 3.8 million (27 percent) prefer bilingual materials.

Latino Company Launches Music Site

voymusic_2.jpg Voy, a Latino Media company has just launched a website dedicated to all Latino music. Interestingly the site is entirely in English.

“The majority of Latinos in this country are bilingual or English dominant, and there are millions of non-Latinos who love Latino music.”

The company plans to unveil a website for Spanish and Portuguese speakers in the coming year but it goes to show how music transcends language. I always find it very interesting when I go to Café Tacuba concerts and see myself next to people that don’t know a word of Spanish but are there for the love the music.

The site’s streaming radio stations feature 23 Latin music styles, such as alternative rock, indie pop, reggaeton, regional Mexican and boleros. It has its own e-label for undiscovered bands and even allows groups to upload their own tunes and distribute straight to the public. The site also sells music and offers podcasting and blogs.

Nuyorker: a new blog en español

1:34 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Blogs| Internet| New York City · 1 Comment

7 Dec 2005

nuyorker.jpgMy friend Oso tipped me to Nuyorker, a new blog that just launched that’s all about NYC, in Spanish. I must say it immediately got my attention because the first post I read was about rapper 50 Cent’s entrepreneurial endeavors — apparently he is promoting his own line of vibrators:

El hip hopero y actor de cine 50 cent va a sacar una linea de “sex toys”. El articulo estrella es una version de 50 cent motorizado con un vibrador igualito a su miembro viril, pero azul (salvo que 50 lo tenga realmente azul) “para que todas las chicas puedan experienciar lo que es tener sexo con 50″.

Googling for Hate

adsense.jpgA few of us have heard the anecdote about the news site that reported a story about some poor person who had been hacked apart, body packed into a suitcase, only to have Google AdSense serve a distasteful ad for Samsonite luggage next to the article. AdSense works in mysterious ways. And if not mysterious, unpredictable. Sometimes its technology associates keywords placed by advertisers and keywords placed by AdSense participants, like VL, correctly. When that happens, I think it’s just luck. In our case, we are not getting very lucky.

flickrscreenshot.jpgPeople who know me know I am addicted to Flickr, the most amazing photo sharing site on the web (by the way, I’m not associated with Flickr — this is real live consumer evangelism). It’s a place where would-be voyeurs clamor for photos from quasi exhibitionists who share everything from what they had for breakfast to to the way they dressed in the 70s. It’s great entertainment, and the best example of a community-building site I’ve seen yet.
