2 Jul 2008

ingrid200.jpgI just heard/read the news, that Ingrid Betancourt and 14 other hostages held by the FARC in Colombia have been released. Various news agencies are saying that they were “rescued” by the Colombian military without any violence.

I am currently watching CNN en Español, which is showing a helicopter that is allegedly holding Betancourt, three U.S defense contractors, and others. All of them are said to be in good health

Latin American leaders across the world are hailing the actions. Evo Morales already is getting heat for using this opportunity to say that this is a prime time to come to a peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC.

More as information comes in.

1-114.jpgMembers of FARC hostage Ingrid Betancourt‘s family say they will not let up on pressuring the Colombian government and the international community to push for more liberations.

Lorenzo Delloye [pictured above with his sister], son of the ex-politician kidnapped 6 years ago told Radio Caracol that the family has hope that FARC will facilitate a new humanitarian agreement which would open up the possibility of the return of those being held.

“We are going to seek out all of the international pressure necessary to support the European emissaries and the Church, and to ask FARC to accept a dialogue. We need for them to say where they want to negotiate,” he said.

Delloye made the statement after the FARC denied the Colombian government’s offer to provide the hostages with medical services. FARC leaders said they denied the visit because it would put the lives of the hostages at risk.

The mother of FARC hostage and once Colombian presidential candidate, Ingrid Betancourt, and other relatives of FARC hostages, went to Venezuela this weekend. While Venezuela didn’t move forward with constitutional reforms promoted by President Hugo Chavez, Yolanda Pulecio and other Colombians trust that he will be the one to insure the safe return of their loved ones.

This is according to a Colombian Senator. Clara Rojas, also a former presidential candidate, and her son are also allegedly set to be released. According to the Senator the releases are happening as a gesture of goodwill on behalf of the FARC. Betancourt has been held since 2002.
