So the institution of the Catholic Church hasn’t been winning points with people, well with me anyway. I mean really? Thankfully Cardinal Francis George has given me a little hope that not all is lost. He told a crowd of hundreds in Our Lady of Mercy Church in Albany Park, Chicago, that Obama should stop the immigration raids to show that the new administration really is about change.
George sought to cast the issue in moral terms, calling it “a matter of conscience” and an important step to creating a more peaceful society.
“We cannot strengthen families when people live in fear from day to day,” he said.
“May this be the year that raids and separation of families stop,” George said. “May this be the year that our legislators pass comprehensive immigration reform.”
Can I get an Amen?

ICE and the media can try and sell the story that the raid on the home of a 68 year old Latina woman was a mistake. Pero there are no mistakes in this age of war and terror. Perhaps its the cynic in me or the history I carry inside me that thinks this was more than a a mere clerical error.
Olga Savage said she went through a harrowing life-changing experience that might have been a total mistake. The 68-year-old woman told Action 4 News that she heard a knock at her door Tuesday morning. But before she had a chance to get up she said U.S. Immigration & Customers Enforcement (ICE) agents were inside her home. “They came in with guns, grenades and holding their pistols,” Savage recalled. When she asked them why they came into her home they allegedly responded, “Show us your papers.” Savage complied by showing them documentation proving that she’s been a United States citizen for 40 years. She said they were shocked to see the paperwork. “They looked confused and said, ‘They told us you didn’t have your papers’,” she recalled. After verifying her documentation, they made copies and left. Olga said they didn’t offer an apology or help. But the experience left her in bad shape. Savage told Action 4 News that she had to drive herself to the local clinic since her blood pressure rose to 280. “I told the doctor don’t let me die because I had a really bad pain,” she said. Savage said she wants to know why federal agents kicked in her door like she was a criminal, if she’s been a citizen for so many years. “Why, why did they have to come like they were going to war, if I’m a women living on my own,” Savage asked. Action 4 News spoke with ICE spokeswoman Nina Pruneda about the incident. Pruneda said ICE agents would never raid someone’s home and adds that the whole confusion started because Olga savage has two alien registration numbers. One number states that she is a U.S. Citizen and the other states that she is a fugitive. Pruneda said ICE will continue looking into this issue.

While everyone (myself included) VP debate drinking games, the U.S. federal government and ICE hope that their continued acts of terrorism against immigrant communities fly beneath the radar.
In a week’s time, ICE arrested 78 people in Pennsylvania and Delaware. The media is playing up the fact that some of those arrested had criminal records and in an effort to stir up fear, called an emergency meeting in the communities where the arrests happening.

On a day when some people were remembering, the exploitation of the ideal of freedom and justice was going down full force in San Francisco. On the night of September 11, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided a San Francisco home, arrested four women and two men while agents searched for an individual who did not reside in the home, according to the city’s Immigrant Rights Commission.
Two supervisors spoke out today against the raid in San Francisco, which a sanctuary city. That status has allowed the city to refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities except in felony cases.
“As a government, we are trying to reduce fear and violence,” said Supervisor Sophie Maxwell, in whose district the raid occurred. “My primary concern is about the families and, in this instance, the young girl whose mother was taken into custody.”
Supervisor Tom Ammiano agreed, saying, “This is yet another example of how ICE operates. There is no humanity in harassing children and leaving them behind.”
School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia’s concern was for the students in his district and commented on possible parental concerns.
“A student came to school today and told teachers that immigration had taken all members of her family,” he said. “I want to assure all of our families that our schools are a safe place for a child to turn for support and we do not ask anyone’s legal status.”

We told you it was only a matter of time before we were announcing and denouncing the latest ICE raid. Yesterday ICE targeted 8 restaurants in Northern Ohio and arrested 58 people.
All those arrested were citizens of Mexico and working at Casa Fiesta, a chain of Mexican restaurants in Ashland, Fremont, Norwalk, Oberlin, Oregon, Sandusky, Vermillion and Youngstown, Ohio, Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement.
It said the raid was the culmination of more than a yearlong investigation.
Of the 58 arrested, 54 were men. Three of the four women were released on their own recognizance on humanitarian grounds, ICE said. They are still required to appear before a federal immigration judge who will determine whether they have a legal right to remain in the United States.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement, aka ICE, has launched another mass raid in a major U.S. city. Yesterday, at around 5 PM, ICE took 31 people who work for a cleaning contractor as janitors in Rhode Island courthouses (catch the irony there). According to the Immigrant Solidarity Network, the contractor has been in a fight with members of Fuerza Laboral for refusing to pay wages. And what a coincidence, the workers are attacked by ICE. From the email:
But fast phone trees brought over 100 people out to support our brothers and sisters held prisoner inside the Providence ICE office – at this hour, people are still outside attempting to block the vans transporting nuestro/as companero/as to detention facilities. We know for sure that at least 3 people were released, and possibly 8 more. Young people from 6 to 16 led the chants and set the tone.
You can see a television news report that covers the fast local response, and reveals the undercounting of those taken in (news reports 24, activists report 31).
A press conference is expected sometime today from ICE in Rhode Island.

I don’t have too much information, as this is based on an email I received, but there apparently was an ICE raid this morning in East Houston, Texas. According to the email, 150 to 200 ICE agents conducted a raid close by the Houston Ship Channel. 60-70% of those who were detained were women (I’m sure some were mothers as well). ICE had release 16 people because one of them was actually a Mexican American and the rest had the legal right to work in the US.
The were also 10 pregnant women. 4 employees were transported for medical treatment, and of the 4, a woman was transported by helicopter to the medical center because she fell 20 feet off a stack of wooden pallets.
If anyone has anymore information, either first hand or via their local papers, please let us know. I will also be posting updates as they come in.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement, better known as ICE, has upped it’s scare tactics and now is resorting to terrorizing families by waiting outside elementary schools. Yesterday afternoon ICE agents parked outside Stonehurst Elementary School in Oakland, California. The agents did not attempt to enter the school but rather lay in wait, like hunters. No arrests have been reported.
There have been other cases of ICE targeting parents through their children. Remember the case of the girls who were deported for cutting school?
This is completely unacceptable. As a parent with a child in public school, I should not be afraid of taking my child to school or picking her up because of ICE agents menacingly parked outside. Personally I am trying to find out what the NYC Department of Education policy is regarding ICE. I urge people to do the same.

Virginia’s Mexican-American community had to do without their annual Cinco de Mayo celebration this year, as a result of a curious phone call from ICE officials and fears that possible immigration raids might make attendees an easy target for ICE officials:
An organizer said she called off the traditional May 5 celebration of Hispanic pride after she said she received a phone call from the Fairfax office of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.“I don’t want to be responsible for one single parent to be taken from their home, whether they’re illegal or not,” said Maria Roe, who launched the festival three years ago.

Yesterday Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made the Chicago Latino community their latest target. Searching the Latino Little Village and its strip mall on the Southwest Side of the city yielded over a hundred arrests. Officials say they were targeting a ring that counterfeits and sells immigration documents in the area. Community members, many who took to the streets to protest this latest redada felt they were being targeted because of the string pro-immigrant rallies that have been held in the area over the past year.
It’s a show of force. We believe it was done to intimidate this community. We can’t see it any other way,” said Ald. George Cardenas (12th). “The number of people involved in this operation is just overwhelming.”
Ald. Ricardo Munoz (22nd) called the operation overkill.
“It was way overkill. They had machine guns, shotguns, bullet-proof vests. It was a huge, huge endeavor,” Munoz said. “They struck fear into the heart of the Little Village community.
