18 Nov 2009So what happens when you give an anti-immigration speech to an anti-immigration crowd–and that anti-immigration speech just so happens to target European immigration?
Why, mass confusion and chants of Columbus go home, of course! But of course, the humor could not be left unpunished. As Crooks and Liar’s reports, violence post rally was at a high level:
As they realized they’d been punked, they stood in a cold, stunned silence, while the 30 or so counter-protesters urged Columbus to go home.
Unfortunately, some of the pro-MINN-SIR audience made up for what they lacked in humor through the use of violence. Both Danielson and I saw middle-aged men attack young protesters, knocking one off a bike before he started throwing punches at the young man.
Just as shocking was the reaction of the state police working the rally, who pushed back those being attacked, rather than those attacking the counter protesters.
Neither of us have ever witnessed violence at rallies and events we’ve attended in the past. The attacks formed a sharp counterpoint to Hendrycks’ shrieked claims from the podium that MINN-SIR “patriots” had “respect” while the young protesters were rude.
The transcript of the speech is below the fold. Read more…

Just in case those conservative lawmakers don’t get what their conservative constituents want in terms of border security (of course we’re talking southern border security. Ignore the terrorists just beyond the Canadian border), one organization is making the message tangibly clear. Send – A – Brick has been urging people to send actual bricks to their local House and Senate representatives as a symbol of support for securing the borders by building a wall between the United States and Mexico. As you can see by the picture, some people have sent decorated bricks with such charming messages as “Stop the Invasion” and “Cuidado! If you can read this, you are too close.”

Some immigration activists are calling today National No Human Being is Illegal Day of Actions. Here in NYC that means a 4 pm vigil of defiance in front of the offices of New York Senators Hilary Clinton & Chuck Schumer at 780 Third Ave & 48th Street in Manhattan. The vigil is being called to protest the recent U.S. Senate bill which calls for the buliding of an extended wall along the U.S./Mexico border as part of an immigration reform plan. According to the website of the organizers of the event, Immigrant Communities in Action, Coalicion de Comunidades Inmigrantes (Washington Heights), and American Friends Service Committee, they are demanding:
1. Full Legalization for all immigrants. No three tier legalization system that will divide our families and No guest-worker programs! 2. Faster Family reunification 3. Protect the rights of all Workers 4. No more deportations, detentions, border walls, and police making immigration arrests 5. Drivers licenses for immigrants.

You didn’t see them marching on Monday, the day of the national boycott, but immigrant celebs like Salma Hayek and Sabado Gigante’s Don Franciso were with the over a million protesters clamoring for human rights, at least in spirit. Salma honored the boycott in her own way by not leaving her Hollywood home and changing her plans. Salma said:
I was supposed to fly to Guatemala but since my airline was American, I re-scheduled my trip for tomorrow.
Don Francisco, whose Univision network showed regulary scheduled novelas and talk shows on the day of the boycott said:
The economy would tremble without the working force of 20 million people who are only asking for their rights to be respected and the services they all deserve, just like any other honest citizen in the rest of the world.

It all depends on who you ask. Right wing pundits and their media a la Lou Dobbs say yesterday was a failure. The country didn’t shut down. Many participants and their supporters point to the fact that although the country wasn’t closed for business, many businesses were closed.
Tyson Foods Inc., the world’s largest meat producer, shuttered about a dozen of its more than 100 plants. Eight of 14 Perdue Farms chicken plants also closed for the day. The rallies shut down 29 branches of Chipotle Mexican Grill, a Denver-based fast-casual dining chain. Goya Foods, which bills itself as the nation’s largest Hispanic-owned food chain, suspended delivery everywhere except Florida in what the company called a gesture of solidarity.

I’ve just returned from the immigrant community of Jackson Heights, Queens, NYC where about a thousand individuals, including many families with their children, formed a human chain of solidarity that ran for 10 city blocks. Chanting, “Si se Puede” and “Bush, Escucha! Estamos en la lucha”.
Some, but not all, stores were closed.
In fact the irony of all ironies was watching the many vendors selling United States flags. Similiar human chains were held simultaniously in other immigrant neighborhoods of the city including Chinatown in downtown Manhattan. The human chain was officially convened at 12:16 pm to recognize the date that the legislation making it a felony to be an undocumented worker was first brought to the Congressional floor.
I will be posting pictures of the immigrant human chain at VivirLatino’s Flickr Page. Tag: 1mayhuelga.
