NYC Hospitals: Safe Haven for Immigrants

hospital.jpgThe City of New York wants to make sure that undocumented immigrants who access its public hospitals feel safe. NYC has been distributing a letter in 11 languages that…:

…promises that public hospital employees will “keep confidential all information regarding your immigration status.” If workers reveal the information, they could lose their jobs, Health and Hospitals Corporation president Alan Aviles writes in the note.

The letter was sent out after a report from local advocates stated that many undocumented immigrants were not seeking medical care because of fear of deportation.

In one case, Aviles said Tuesday, a mother of three from Mexico refused to seek treatment for cervical cancer until an advocacy group intervened.

One can only hope that other city agencies will follow through and make sure that people’s human rights are not violated regardless of their immigration status.
