Economic boycotts are an extremely difficult political tactic. They require widespread mass support in order to be effective. But the difficulty of using such a weapon isn’t stopping Latinos in Prince William County, Virginia from using it as a tool against anti-immigrant policies. The boycott, which began yesterday, is a week long campaign targeting all non-immigrant-owned businesses, including such chains as Wal-Mart and McDonald’s. At such an important time for businesses, back to school time, the impact of a boycott could be great. Although, those that back the measure aren’t so sure.
“They don’t have a prayer of reversing this resolution, which has the support of 80 percent of county residents,” said Greg Letiecq, an activist who heads Help Save Manassas. “This is an attempt to bully immigrant businesses.”

The new Latinized version of the U.S. National Anthem may be marketable and timely but can you dance to it? To steal Emma Goldman’s words, if I can’t dance, it’s not my revolution! Well if you’re going to be in Milledgeville, Georgia, you can dance instead of march on May 1st. According to a press release sent out by Chicano artist and chair of the art department of Georgia College & State University, Richard Lou(whom VL featured) there will be an In Solidarity Dance-In. Instead of marching, we will DANCE together

Latino celebs are jumping on the bandwagon to support the rights of all people, including immigrants. The Dia sin Mexicanos boycott, that VL wrote about last week, is featured on Juan Gabriel‘s website. The call to participate in the boycott goes so far as to name some big companies that Mexicanos should not buy from on May 1st including major fast food chains and big box retailers. I don’t think Juan Gabriel will be getting any endorsement offers anytime soon.

As the immigration debate rages on within the halls of the U.S. Congress and within the country at large, many within the immigrant community and those working in solidarity with them are using different tactics to show their power and express their opinion. There have been mass protests, marches, and walkouts from coast to coast and there are calls for continued action until those who have built their lives and worked in the U.S. are guaranteed basic human rights regardless of their status. On Tuesday, a coalition of Latinos called for there to be no labor on May Day, May 1st.
