9 May 2008The document that follows, “Detainee Deaths 2004-November 2007,” is the government’s fullest account to date of deaths in immigration detention. Compiled by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and obtained by The New York Times under the Freedom of Information Act, it lists the names of 66 people who died, their dates of birth and death, where they were last held, where they died and the cause of death.
But errors and omissions on the list made it difficult for The Times to confirm the identities of many whose deaths had not previously come to public attention, to find out why they died, or to locate relatives.
Along with 13 deaths cited as suicides, 14 as the result of various cardiac ailments and 9 related to H.I.V. and AIDS, the list includes cryptic causes of death like “unresponsive” and “undetermined. ” The list does not mention the immigrants’ nationalities or where they lived in the United States. Some names and birth dates appear garbled.

Is the anti-immigrant movement so desperate to up it’s numbers of undocumented that they have resorted to catching undocumented immigrants when they are leaving the U.S. into Mexico? Seems so. SAN DIEGO — U.S. border authorities no longer apprehend illegal immigrants only as they enter the country. Now they’re catching them on the way out.
At random times near the Tijuana-San Diego border, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers have been setting up checkpoints, boarding buses destined for Mexico and pulling off people who don’t have proper documentation.
Vincent Bond, an agency spokesman, said departing immigrants are fair targets.
“If our officers come upon people who are here illegally . . . regardless of whether they’re leaving the country, we detain them, make a record of the fact they were here illegally and return them to Mexico,” Bond said.
Um. OK. With people all up in arms of how much “illegal immigration” is costing the country, does this seem like a good use of resources?

A recently launched website that claims to “represent both sides of the issue equally and will reflect public opinion of the border wall with a virtual representation” scares me. the website allows people to “buy a brick” on a border wall with the money going to an anti-immigrant organization. “Breaking a brick” will send money to an anti-border wall organization.
Last time I checked more people had contributed to building the wall than breaking the wall, but is this an actual representation of public opinion or a representation of who holds power and money? Do people who are against the wall, including the millions of undocumented and documented immigrants have access to the technology and money that is required to make this a real representation of sentiments?

While the facts about immigrant detention are important to note, I take issue with the idea that justice and human rights is an “American” value.
First, as I have noted before, it bothers me how the word “American” has been appropriated to mean the United States and exclude Latin America, including Central and South America. This to me is a framing of America that seeks to silence a large portion of the “American” population (the “voiceless” in the MLK quote).

17 Apr 2008Oh the irony of it all. As Pope Benedict declared God Bless America from Washington D.C., immigrants in 8 states: Arkansas, Florida. Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Texas, Tennessee and West Virginia, were more likely quoting Rev. Wright.
Federal immigration agents raided Pilgrim’s Pride poultry plants in five states today in a crackdown on an alleged scam to provide fake identification for illegal immigrant workers.
Julie Myers, Immigration and Customs Enforcement assistant secretary, told The Associated Press that more than 100 people were expected to be arrested on criminal charges related to identity theft.
There is talk that this recent wave of raids is a scare tactic. Is it coincidence that the raids happened on the same day that the pro-immigrant May Day Marches were announced? Certainly, in my immigrant ‘hood, there is fear of living day to day, never mind exposing yourself in a very public display of activism.

In an effort to boost her sagging ratings and reputation, Katie Couric and the CBS evening news have decided to move to the far right and depict undocumented women having babies in the U.S. as people taking advantage of the “system” at “taxpayer” expense. The headline roars : Illegal Immigrant Births – At Your Expense, as if immigrants contribute zero to the U.S. economy. The use of the word illegal is a code word meant to invoke anger and fear.

We may watch to much tv, but California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger won’t point the finger at immigration for his state’s budget woes.Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger called it a “big mistake” Wednesday to blame illegal immigrants for the state’s looming $8 billion budget gap, just as Republican lawmakers have proposed a rollback of benefits for illegal immigrants to save money…”There is, you know, always a time like this where you start pointing the finger at various different elements of what creates the budget mess, and, you know, some may point the finger at illegal immigrants,” Schwarzenegger said. “I can guarantee you, I have been now four years in office in Sacramento, I don’t think that illegal immigration has created the mess that we are in.”..
I guess we gotta give credit where credit is due.

Playing on people’s fears is something that the United States is really good at so it’s no wonder that people are playing on the fears of the undocumented to commit crimes against them.
Immigrant communities in the Boston area are in a heightened state of fear as people impersonating law enforcement officials barge into their homes and extort money from them. The Boston Herald documents several reports of this oppression.
This crime is playing on the fears of the undocumented, fear of law enforcement. So great is this fear that when crimes are committed against them, often they won’t report these crimes.
